Encouragement for anyone struggling to learn Tig..

Did you find any faults with you welder though or we it all techniques?

Welder was faultless.
His technique was very good.
90% of the struggle was down to a slash in the gas line that he found and then rapped in tape

We soon got it changed and then things took an immediate turn for the better.

You can mTe.. Believe in yourself.. My best advice is find one of the many many tig stars on here mTe that's nearby you, take them some biscuits and learn from them.. I tried the wrong way round.. Believing in YouTube and stubbornness .. The hour and a half I travelled to meet one such Tig God has totally transformed my tigging and more.. If I'd had known this before, I'd have walked there and back wearing a Milwall shirt if needs be to get my tuition.. I can't describe the confidence it brought me X

Yes mTe a big gas leak.. Richard fixed that tinkered with my technique and installed the lacking confidence, not looked back since.. Wonderful Guy and a wonderful forum.. X

I'm encouraged by your posting this.

It's there mTe for all of us, you just need to want it and go ask for help on here.. That's my only regret, due to a few health issues I went about it back to front really.. But now I have so many great friends on here who I know I can turn too at anytime.. I've one of the many great tutors on here by myside now, I believe totally in him and he knows just how determined I am to achieve..

You just can't beat experience at the end of the day.. It's priceless.. Just like a West Ham season ticket.. X

No doubt I'll be doing lots of that, having had my partially-filled Argon bottle replaced this a.m. by BOC - so once I get a few other jobs out from under my feet I'll be good to go.

Your mentor actually gave me the TIG torch to get started, along with some wisdom already.

No problem, you have now discovered a hidden talent so stick at it and you don't know where it will lead. It's a very versatile process and there are very few metals that can't be joined by tig.

There was one of our fitters who just couldn't get the hang of tig welding. One of the other fitters was a professional tig welder and even with his tuition he still couldn't tig weld! Could also have been laziness as we often had to carry out tig repairs in less than ideal conditions & locations (I worked in a food factory).

If you can get hold of some stainless steel scrap give it a try, I always found it easier to weld than mild steel.

Very interesting comments on lighting. I always struggle to see where the heck I am going. Sometimes (occasionaly) I can do a really nice bead but in way the wrong place. Aaaaargh.
I have been trying brighter and brighter lights with no success so will try your method next. Thanks for posting, it's encouraging for another TIG newbie who is in a foreign land and unable to find tuition!

same here ,ive just read this thread and been doing exactly the same getting brighter and brighter but still struggle to see the pool and where im going some times ,

greased up what are you asking , is an auto ok for tig as ive been trying with an old fixed auto so far with mixed results but have an adjustable parweld that i took out the box this week any suggestions to settings would be appreciated

Im just a novice at welding aswell, just i was having trouble with the lowest shade setting on my cheap chinese helmet still being too dark. I bought a Phantom extreme and solved alot of the problems that were caused by using an unsuitable helmet. Everyone is different, i had to turn the Phantom down to 7 so i could see the aluminium pooling and the join being welded. As my welding improves, i may decide it needs to be turned darker.

I had a ferm helmet that I bought years ago but it could not cope with low amp welding and continually alternated between too dark and turned off. I just bought myself an R-tech helmet which is much more sensitive and doesn't flash me mid weld . However although I can see the puddle there is next to no peripheral vision even on 9. Might just be my aging eyes. Very frustrating though. If only helmet manufacturers could make something with individual pixels that darkened independently. Then you would get shade from the arc but be able to see where you going! Dream on, but perhaps some day. All the best guys, great and helpful forum.

I've just copied this from my post somewhere else, it might help.

Here's something that might help others out with their welding.
I've got a Parweld XR935H auto darkening welding helmet that I've had trouble seeing out of and recently it's also been going dark when I'm close up to a light source (not an arc). I'm learning tig so seeing what's going on is really important!
I've done a couple of mods to it that seem to work well so here's whet I've done.
Firstly I've put a strip of black insulation tape across the top of the screen just over the solar panel part. This seems to help stop it darkening without reason.
Secondly I've made a cover for the top of the helmet as its quite open and with my baldy lack of hair lets in a lot of light that,
A. reflects off the inside of the screen making things harder to see.
B. was letting light into the back of the sensors that also contributed to the screen going dark on me.
It now seems to work much better and I can see much more clearly.
Hope this helps if you're having trouble seeing things.
