how do you do that? i use thunderbird too and its grand, but that part of it is a bit annoying!

At first view/sort by unthreaded worked, but it kept resetting itself, so the below is what I have recently advised somebody.

Stop threaded view completely.

Edit > Settings
Then in the search box "Find in Settings" (may need to scroll right to see) type config.
One of the hits should be Config Editor... open this.
In the search box "Search preference name" type default_view.
The result should be mailnews.default_view_flags and be set to 1.
Click the pencil icon to edit the setting and change it to 0.
Now you have set the default view to Unthreaded.

Now to set all your existing folders to Unthreaded.
Click View > Sort by > Unthreaded.
Click on the icon at the very right of the column heading bar (see attached screenshot)
at the very bottom is the option Apply current view to... >
then follow to Folder and its children... >
and apply to your accounts and local folders as required.

The Bat by Ritlabs I just wouldn't consider anything else. Yes it is a bit "techie" but once you have set it up it is double secure and almost impervious to any email nasties you may be sent. I agree, it can take a while to set up and even after almost thirty years of continuous use I still don't use all of the features but those I do use are powerful and fast.
