Electronic speed control for wood turning lathe.

I have a single phase Axminster AWVSL1000 with an expanding / contracting pulley system for speed control. I have a hankering to upgrade to electronic control and am wondering whether this may be possible or whether the answer is to sell it and start again.
Any ideas?

My "Poolewood" has the same variable pulley system, 0.75kw motor.......I do heavey'ish stuff and works well for me.....perhaps a different tool technique might help.........I got rid of all my cheapo lathe tools and bought the likes of Sorby etc, that made a whole lot of difference......even a have a few carbide tipped chisels for the donkey/rough work............spose if ur making pen's etc perhaps it may be necc........
would like a "Union Graduate" but funds don't allow........dream machine a Hegner VB36, but at £4000....ouch...........will watch this topic with interest........good luck........just a thought, is ur's heavily weghted down ? ...mine needs a pallet truck to move it.....

Everything is possible, just a case of figuring out a budget and what your motor spec is. Can you provide details on the motor? Brushed, brushless, AC, DC, power?

a vfd and 3 phase motor will give you better control but thats all cost all depends on what you are wanting to pay for
