In all my years driving I have never had a car hand brake seize when in use or needed to change cable due to stretch.

Your engine can let the car move as the cylinder pressure leaks away.

Ive only had it freeze once when extremely cold.
The stretched cable issue was more of a problem in the 80's. I've changed several, where you are out of adjustment at the lever end due to cable stretch. It was quite common then, to the point of motor factors selling a device that sat on a straight stretch of cable and you screwed it in to take up the slack. I can't be the only one old enough to remembers these! I think they became illegal for an "MOT work around" at some point though!
Maybe the cable quality has improved.
I had a Landover discovery once, my wife parked it on Redcar high st, went shopping and returned to find it in the middle of the high street! She hadn't pulled the lever hard enough, so she leaves it in gear now too.
I think there's enough compression in my diesel engine to hold the car better than the hand brake!

You've never owned a 90s/00s Honda then
Rear callipers are notorious for the handbrake seizing, I've repaired or replaced loads in my time, and I'm not a mechanic by trade.

Or the old corsa handbrake cables, common for binding/corroding and sticking the shoes on and cooking the drums - all exposed cables going through 90 degree bends on plastic wear plates directly subject to road spray. Genius design.

I think they only time I ever use a handbrake is at the MOT, sick of fixing them.
I've often considered converting to a hydraulic and just leaving the cables in for show to pass the MOT – that might actually make it a useful feature.

Or an iveco daily!

I must have reconned 3 pairs of them for the camper we had over the 4 years we had it.

Sad state of affairs when the normal home/diy mechanic cant fit his/her own brake pads I will keep running the old tat I have for as long as I can.

Need & improvement are different things.

Think of them as assistance for when you get it wrong.

Or we might as well get rid of:-
airbags
seat belts
crumple zones
active safety devices
laminated glass
ABS
stability program
traction control
ect ect

As you "should" not need them IF you drive correctly.

But nice to have just in case.

Theres a world of difference between most of that list of safety features and entirely unnecessary additions that are prone to failureor very difficult home maintenance. Its a completely different argument.

I've got some of those!

I seem to recall a guy in the Lotus seven club lost the argument that engine compression created enough braking force to pass - he tried though.

I remember the first time reversing my car transporter trailer down the drive with an 04 Subaru . . . the point when I discovered it had hill hold brakes, as I was used to simply letting the lot roll backwards down the drive, controlling it on the brakes . . . progress changed from a nice smooth roll, to a jerky fits and starts motion. for some reason the same thing on an 07 Alfa, or 16 Diodge doesn't seem so annoying, unless I've just got used to it.

Surely its just the need for another tool though?

I had to finally buy a wind back tool to get the pistons back in my Alfa, after managing without one on various Lancias for the previous 20 yrs - old files and bits of bent brass simply didn;t work well enoguh any more.

My first kit car reused Triumph Spitfire bits - I used to have to ask the MOT man not to jack it up with the handbrake applied . . . or it snapped the rear cables if they were done up tight enough to work on the flat.

its not its criminal .new disks and pads 85 quid and a few hours work dont want to knack the puter up if it goes south thanks for the offer you made if u were closer theres some canny members on here

My Dad made a couple of those at his work for my first car, a Ford Popular which had cable brakes all round.
