I would surprised if it is ac but I'm with you - 230v seems a lot given its operational environment.Tag says 230V. Could be 230V DC but it's unlikely IMO that you'd run that much DC deliberately into tool designed to get covered in coolant and conductive dust.

As long as it has power applied ac can be used as an electromagnet I think? (Obviously in a correctly designed circuit)I doubt if it is AC
AC voltage goes from North to South pole and has a de-magnetising effect.

I can't see DC after the volts 230 tag, can someone circle it I must be missing something?
Just found this pdf from Walker magnets. seems to suggest that 230v dc is not that uncommon.
