thinking of gettnig one of these this time as I see all new welders are supplied with a crocodile style grip

is there much difference in 400amp 600amp don't think anyone ever uses one at either 400amp or 600amp so why the huge ratings

now the question, if you are like me and like to bend the rod as soon as you place it in the holder so as to keep you hand in its natural position during welding are you fooked with a crocodile style grip as the rod will simply come out of the holder?

I like to bend the rod forwards, find it a bit easier

I like to bend the rod forwards, find it a bit easier

its universal so will carry the full current capacity if needed .also to suit the size cable required mine holds between 2.0 mm and 6.0mm

The crocodile holders have 4 grooves, two 0 deg (right angle to handle) and two at +/-45 deg. The holder you linked looks like 30 deg.

The twist type are better for holding the rods tight. The crock type will just pull off if the rod sticks an you try to twist the handle to beak it free.

Mine is a 300A and the two right-angle slots have a hard time holding 1.6mm rods. I would think a 400 or 600A would be even worse on small rods. You can bend small rods in it. I would not try it with a 3.2mm though; probably just slip in the jaws.

The 600a rod holders are quite a bit heavier than the 400a - makes your arm tired after a long shift. The 400amp holder is suitable for just about all stick welding unless your welding powerstations together

I always prefer the croc type holder as it holds the rods in a suitable position without the need for bending them. Bending, especially lo hi rods can break the flux coating off them.

There is another screw type holder a "Myking" (scroll down the page), but its very expensive compared to snub nose holders.

I personally use the snub nose type and bend the rod, it seems to reduce rod whip when striking an arc. I agree that gripping/holding small rods can be a pain, but its down to the quality of the holder at the end of the day, a cheap holder isn't going to be of high quality.

how does the myking work is it a snub nose(screw in) or is it a crocodile type

it is so much more expensive than everything else that it must be the mother of all of the them

I used to have one of the basic screw in type but got fed up with the rod (even 2.5mm) slipping to the side of the clamp and coming lose from time to time (maybe my holder was faulty). I now have a Myking holder and haven't looked back since. Beware that there are Myking original holders and also 'Myking Type' holders, which are a cheap copy, on the market. The Myking is a screw in holder. From memory, I think the Myking come in 200, 400 and 600A versions. As someone said above, I think the choice comes down to weight, once you have one heavy enough for your anticipated use.

Myking also do a very nice heavy (600A?) screw down earth clamp. Nice kit.

the myking type holders are heavier than the snub nose tongs but the mykings last a lot longer if you are using them out and about on site, dragging them up and down ladders, platforms etc.

the extra weight does come in usefull when beating apprentices!

The myking's have a domed head on the screw which only seems to hold the rod at one point. The rods seem to be held at a strange angle relative to the handle and i always have to bend the rod to get a reasonable angle.

This always seems to result in the rods acting like a water diviner going round and round , so now, if i find any in work, i always chuck them in the skip and fit the snub nose type.
