I did check the terminal connection on the blistered cable was tight, didn't think far enough, will recheck that *both* cables are clamped tight.

The help is appreciated, it all makes sense but I've had a hard week and thought / hoped this was now sorted. Ho hum.

better to check now it will take 15 minutes. if it is faulty will take a fair bit longer to sort it/ hopefully it isnt

The shower is happier now I’ve fitted a new breaker. Same 40A spec as the old one, difference is this one doesn’t trip and the shower water runs a lot hotter. Nice !
I’m guessing some poor internal contact on the original trip switch but it’s on it’s way to the bin so not important.

You could have fitted an auto-resetting MCB

i regularly saw farmers trying to prop the old voltage operated trips up with a stick it didnt work though

Checked and reseated the melted wires in the fusebox. It’s the downstairs ring main and has 3 cables, I suspect it’s 2 for the ring the other is a spur to a recent outside light. All seemed tight, no signs of scorching - next job is to check each socket on that ring. 2 cables should clamp fine, maybe 3 in 1 clamp is a problem?

The shower isolator was warm after my shower so I removed the faceplate and all looks tight - no heat damage.
I like that they used 6” screws so no chance of it falling off the wall !

3 in 1 should be fine but is the third cable for the light a 1.5 or 2.5mm?
It shouldn't be 1.5mm on a 32 amp MCB.

no need to check every socket. just go to the furthest socket on the ring and part the cables test each leg live to neutral and live to earth with a voltage meter on both legs take the lot off if u feel the need though if all is loose

Re the LED lights glowing when off, is there a powerline ethernet setup running in the property, by any chance? The induced voltages from those could be as high as several volts, in certain parts of the mains.
