Yes Robotstar what you and BS say makes perfect sense to me, which makes me think (if there is no wiring fault) it would hardly be worth the trouble and extra expense of fitting double pole 13a sockets unless you would want to completely isolate an appliance from wiring.

he must have had a large fuse in that lighting circuit the size of the bang 
every time he gets a shock hese blown to the floor 
ive had loads and never been blown to the floor. the only thing that pees me off is blowing my knipex snips up at 20 quid a pop

I had that, doing work at the house and 'stupidly assumed' the circuit was correctly labelled on the consumer unit.
Cut the cable and 'pop', left a lovely scorch mark and a melted knick in my cutters.
Always check with volt pen etc now, just to be safe as it appears the circuits are random in our house !

Chances are you have had your shoes on which has insulated you from earth.
A few years ago in our town a woman decided it was such a nice day that she would do her ironing in the garden. Extension lead from a non RCD socket into the garden, bare feet and a faulty iron was enough to kill her.

I have seen a bloke thrown maybe 4-5m across a floor when he cut through a phase on a 3 phase supply to some site cabins that was supposed to be dead. He nearly was. I was stood far too close to him for comfort.
Supply was feeding 4 cabins, mid winter, all heaters etc on full pelt. Cut it with a pair of Leathermans. His arms were badly burnt, all his front black, was in hospital for weeks - not so much the burns - he had heart problems anyway, 415v through him didn't help things.

A chap I used to drink with worked on the council laying tarmac to replace paving slabs, using a road breaker he went through a 11 KVA cable. Flash burns up his arms and across his chest and smashed all his teeth when his jaw clenched together! Survived to tell the tale and gets plenty of drinks out of it.
Apparently when his mates went to help him his boots were smoking!

a guy down the road from us wasnt as lucky in the hole .the 11k did blow him out of it and died minutes later

A few years ago my dad gave me a piece of cable with one nicely cut end and one horribly severed end, it had one core in it, more than 1/2" diameter so imagine the power that was carrying. The horrible end was cut by a builder with a spade
. I think he said he didn't die because they knew there were lives cables nearby and had to wear insulated boots but he got a nasty shock and burns. I'll try to find it tomorrow.
