Electric over WiFi? This is crazy!

Just speaking to my mate in work this week and he says I reckon we’ll see a sort of wireless electric In the next 10 years. Guess what, it seems that it is possible!!!

I think most people would be even more surprised if they knew how and why a simple electric circuit works, like say, a torch.

There's a battery, a switch and wires in between. Hit the switch, electrons "flow", the lightbulb comes "on". It comes on almost immediately but where do the electrons come from?

Perhaps more on topic, where does the energy come from which causes the filament in the bulb to glow?

I have a "pop science" version in my head, be interested to see what people think because the way things work is always a darned sight more complicated than they first appear and "electric over WiFi" is a direct result of tapping into this other worldly weirdness.

Any basic radio transmission is a form of wireless electricity - that's how crystal sets manage to work. And if you're close enough to a powerful radio transmitter and put up the right size aerial you can hijack useful amounts of power. But most of the transmitted energy is lost (to space, to heat etc). Close range inductive coupling works too - witness wireless phone charging. But useful energy at distance with minimal loss is a different matter.

The why and how of how this works is a phenomenally complex subject but it's nothing like the way we think of it.
