I've received the motor with variable gearbox from @Olderisbetter and had a tinker with it today.
I had to swap the speed control knob to the other side but couldn't get the blanking plug out so had to dismantle a little further, on closer inspection I noticed I'd missed a grub screw!, oh well a good change to clean everything up.
It's the type of variable gearbox which has steel balls in a big bronze ring and changes the speed by altering the angle of the balls and the location of the ring on the balls, anyone know what they are called? I'm sure someone on here had pictures of one, possibly @Pete. ?
Anyway, got it all back together and now it doesn't quite work right. It works but will only get up to full speed if I turn the adjuster very slowly.
It had almost no oil in it so I stuck some 75/90 gear oil in it
Also the gaskets were all knackered so I decided to just use some RTV, it seems like these gaskets were critical in keeping clearances correct as with no gaskets the whole thing binds up so in a pinch I cut up some feeler blades the same thickness to use as shims.
So basically I'm not sure if it's the oil or a clearance issue. The whole thing must work on friction so oil type must be critical? Any advice as to what type to use?
I don't want to strip it all down again if it's as simple as changing the oil.
Cheers!
