Electric Die Grinder

I got one of these (I only paid £20 for the same model) asI figured it would be good for work on the car using wire wheels, poly discs etc.

It got a 6mm collet so I got some wire wire wheels with 6mm - 1/4" shanks but they don't fit. I got one in but it was a tight struggle and when I fired up the grinder I could barely hold it as it was vibrating like mad. When I took the wheel out the grinder was fine when I fired it up. It must be because the shank wasn't fully in the collet so the ballast was all off.

So what the hell can I use this thing for? It seems to be of no use to me now.

Yep. Those things turn so fast I'd not want to use a wire wheel in them. Wire wheels = 2,000 rpm (electric drill), die grinders 20,000 rpm +.

With burs for porting aluminium cylinder heads, cleaning up holes cut in aluminium, grinding stones for cleaning up welds in tubing, etc.

Think of it as a big, powerful, single speed dremel.

I bought an Hitachi die grinder. Dirt cheap and brand new.
Use it every so often usually for making things fit!
Recently used it to slot some holes on site in 12mm plate.
Was pleasantly supprised how quickly it did the job with very little rattling.
I had a new carbide burr in it - a garryson one.
Well impressed.

They are great tools to have -- you're unlikely to use one every day (unless you port cylinder heads or weld tubing for a living) -- but there are some jobs nothing else will touch that they'll make easy work out of.

1/4 inch is 6.3 mm, so it probably wouldn't fit a collet easily.

Ah well.
