Electric die grinder

Has anyone used an electric die grinder as a precision lathe grinder on a home made tool post adaptor ???

I've seen people do it with Dremels before, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

it would depend on how much your taking off .tool post grinders have reasonably size wheels . a small one would wear out quicker and wouldnt be as accurate

not that i would use one but u would cover the surfaces up with a cloth and masking tape

What exactly are tool post grinders for? Is it for shaping really hard metals on a lathe?

Yeah brightspark, but could you ever be sure you had covered all of it ? I know i could't, and would be worried about wear. I have seen several cylindrical grinders going for very small money, they seem to be a machine that have little appeal, if i had the space i would have bought one.

OK, pretty much decided on the Makita GDO600. It is about the same price at Power tool World and Sitebox, £82. Has anyone used these suppliers? They seem well established so presuming they are reputable, but open to buying elsewhere if they have good service.

I am planning on getting the 240v with the 6mm collet. Variable speed would be great but they are out of my price range.

There are a few electric die grinders on eBay at the moment but seem to be either 110v or sellers want near the new price.

See if you can get a 1/4" collet too if you can , i was given some new carbide burrs made in america and the 6mm collet would not open wide enough. Makita are a good grinder.

Yes, very precisely too. Provided your using a real tp grinder with either adjustable or graded for precision grinding spec bearings on the spindle, and not a dremel in a holder, or a die grinder in a clamp. Most the people dont even have the metrology equipment to be able to measure to the difference in precision but if you need it, it matters.
