All hell breaks loose in the street. Of course when anything is dug up nowadays it has to be signposed for 3 miles either side and cones and signs placed for maximum obstructive effect.

Gang of navvies dig up franks pride and joy front garden across the road to lay a new incomer from the street. Talking to his neigbour (with a new nissan leaf) i asked if frank had needed a new main. He sheepishly mumbled something about a loop and a charging point. Now I would never have put frank as an electric car person. Talking to another neighbour its the leaf charging point that has highlighted a fault and led to poor frank having his garden dug up when its not even for his car. Ill stick with diesel I think

Sounds like half a story if I'm honest. Absolute max size for a home charger is 11kw (ish) running from a 32a supply

We’re on t-n-c-s and its old (1960’s) cable. Theyve replaced a few lengths round the estate . Im wondering if there was an earth loop fault

The contractors will be duty bound to return his garden to the condition it was in prior to the work starting, so he should be OK.

Might entail a bit of 'standing his corner' though.

Not likely a fault, just the neighbor being fed from next doors supply "looped".

The chargepoint means a higher demand so safer to give each property their own cable direct from a larger feed.

Sounds like it was a "looped-in" supply - i.e. a single incomer in to one semi-detached house, which is then looped under the floor to next door. For most new charger installations, that will need to be resolved by the DNA providing a new dedicated supply from the road to each semi.

Common these parts with semis and 4 in a block properties.

I work for a DNO, current policy is that a looped supply is to be removed if any work is required on that supply.

Also any new supply is now a three phase supply, even if the mains / local transformer is only single phase we still lay a three phase service cable and fit three phase cut out ready in case the transformer is upgraded to three phase.

Any mains cable is now 300mm2 where as we used to lay 95mm2 and 185mm2.

My sister lives in a late 60s semi and that is fed from next door as you can see it coming in under the suspended floor, it is fused at 60A. I wouldn’t blame electric cars for example induction hobs, electric ovens, electric showers, and possibly heat pumps will only drive up electric demand. My sisters house had a single socket per room and two singles in the kitchen, power overload was never considered.

The power network envisaged 50 years ago isn’t really fit for purpose in my opinion.

Some developments have a ‘ransom strip’ about a metre wide along which all the utilities are run. Saves digging the road up. Whilst it forms part of the front garden m, you don’t a town it and the utility companies have the right to carry out any necessary works. Not so sure about the extent of making good though….

Gigaclear dug up the footpath right next to our fencing to lay their cable six inches down. They just left it with loose soil raked back over the trench.

You must have got a good team!
We reinstated a car park to a better standard than we found it, after drilling boreholes and many metres of trenches.
Fibre installers completely trashed it, luckily I had pictures after we finished and before they started

Had to come back three times to mine - they bust paving slabs, that were a week old, getting them up, and simply re-laid them. Came with new ones and couldn't cut them to fit as well as my originals . . . so third time lucky they sent out someone who knew what they were doing . . .

Not exactly
A bit grumpy but it highlights the potential problems with supplies not really suitable for high demand, the hidden costs of ev and electric heating infrastructure
I imagine France with its tiny service in a lot of houses would suffer!

For the record I have a electric car.
It’s not because I’m self righteous or pc , it’s because im not a fan of burning diesel and I’m anti oil companies and the resultant wars they instigate.
Biggest reason is I’ve become a class a minge and charge it on a solar array at home and my workshop has a 75kw array so zero cost

11kW will not run from a 32A supply! 11kw/240=45.83A rule of thumb is about 4.16 amps per kW

Perhaps an enlightened mod (if there are any) should change the thread title to make the thread less ‘anti-EV’?

It is not your thread.
Regardless of the accuracy of the title, it belongs to the OP and it's not for anyone else to request that the title should be changed.

You can always start your own thread and maybe put up a pic or two if you like.
