In the midst of an energy crisis too. Is there some genuine reason for it to close, or is it part of financial strategy and money games?

Such a shame - we wouldn't be in this mess if we had more nuclear power stations. Electric prices at an all time high and still reliant on fossil fuels
Total lack of investment in nuclear power by many different governments over the years. Gordon Brown sold off Westinghouse which was the final nail in the coffin.

It’s well past it’s original planned closure date, they have had problems with cracking in the reactor (I think they had been on reduced power for a long time due to this) and were on short term extensions for running but looks like it’s finally got to the end.

So in the middle of an energy crisis and at a time when apparently we are all killing the planet and about to die we turn off a plant that produces almost zero “greenhouse gases “ and become more reliant on nasty dirty gas and coal ?

It was only ever going to run for max another year, think it was only originally due to run for 25 years or so, hence it was already extended a lot - doubt we will ever know the full details but you would hope (maybe optimistically) it was done at least for sound technical reasons.

Yes, was originally built to run for 25 years, so has done great operating for 46.
It was shut down due to safety reasons due to hairline cracks in the graphite core. Has been running on reduced power for some time, but the line has to be drawn somewhere with safety as the priority and obviously due to the nature.
Just a shame nothing was built years earlier in readiness as we are way behind now.

another couple of years heysham 1 is shutting down and hartlepool powerstation .been living on borrowed time for a while now

The issue with Nuclear is successive Govt namby-pambying around, and asking an ignorant electorate the wrong question "do you want nuclear power?", when they should have been saying "if we don't have nuclear power we'll run short of energy, and what there is will be hugely expensive".
The people will always shout "NO!" put to them the first way - but if they were presented with it the 2nd way.... a lot more would have plumped for nuclear (& instead they'd be fighting for the plants to be in someone else's back yard, & not theirs

= not in my back yard . we have hartlepool and no one bats an eyelid. in fact ask a lot of people local and they dont know its there

People always say that nimbys/opposition is or was the biggest hinderance for nuclear while conveniently forgetting it’s eye wateringly expensive to build - there’s been very few been built anywhere in the last 20 years or so (save for China who have cash to spare)…

Yeah, currently - but they have been a financial powerhouse for the last 15-20 years just look at the other other major infrastructure projects they’ve completed in that time. The country is unrecognisable from 30 years ago.

they have run it into the ground, it's the nuclear equivalent to a morris marina with papier-maché sills

Current estimates is about 5 trillion shortfall iirc
Lease land. Sell houses use money to get more land instead of building houses.
Population is refusing to pay mortgages on property that hasn't been built and the gov are getting antsy and bailing em out.
