The tech/infrastructure/affordability will be there to do that in an EV a lot sooner than anything hydrogen powered.

I'm not so sure of that one, ounce the impracticalities and small fortune and time it will take too fix the aincent creaking and groaning national grid for wide spread renewables and ev use I think hydrogen will become the proffered option pretty quickly considering most petrol stations already have lpg or propane gas equipment either installed now or use too have and all you have too do is truck in the tanks and refrigeration unit plonk them down on a concrete slab and rig the pipe work and hey presto your away with only a week too 10 days disruption too the locals. Multiple teams at multiple stations, big factories churning out the equipment, far easier and cheaper than the national grid upgrade and you can get the private sector too bear the brunt of the cost straight away. Generation facilities are similarly quick too erect and containerised transport tanks already exist and are in use so, I'm not so sure I agree with you there. Not too mention transferable skills from oil and gas keeping a lot of people in employment with out monumentally expensive retraining that would otherwise be without a job.

Wind and solar, tidal and less so hydro are all here for good - sighting failed historic maintenance contracts is pointless.
So oil will be here for a long while yet, and is likely to be taxed further, until the power distribution companies can't supply the demand for chargers anyway. Who wants to pay a fortune for a new car they can't fix - plenty I guess, and a balance will be struck, once our rulers realise they can't change physics by taxation.
So let's all get on eh?

You see this is wrong - the National Grid is not the issue - it's the distribution companies - 33kV and below - they need to fit loads of new transformers (land) - and cables to people's houses and charge points. Possibly doubling the size of the LV network. No small feat, but doable, up to the terraced streets in towns I would guess.

Numbers and statistics can be manipulated to display the good of almost every argument depending on the promoters agenda.
For me a bigger enviroment saver in the short term would be to remove single use plastics from society so they dont end up being thrown from the windows of all the eco warriors electric cars once they finish their imported over priced coffee and tofu cakes.

I once picked a big order of fittings up from a supplier, each one in its own individual bag. One of the big wigs happened to be in branch so I put him right on the spot and made him squirm.
Me and all the staff opened every bag and the big wig agreed to send all the packaging back to there supplier, dont know if he ever did

I'm not a denier. I just think what we are been made to suffer is dispropionate to the size of the problem and the impact we (the UK) will make.

I couldn't get the maths to stack up a few years ago. Because there was such a strong second hand market and very few "banger" EVs (if such a thing is even possible), the cost per driven mile was always more expensive for me. Even if electric was free. Needed to do a lot of miles to compare favourably to an older car. Even an uneconomical luxo-barge. But that's just me and things may have changed. Economics would be very different if you were motivated to have a brand new vehicle.
All that said, I'd like to have one, even if only for a while. The swizz is, that I could charge up a car for next to nothing on solar and wind energy that we get a bit of FiT on anyway. That energy currently heats my house/water. I could stop using it for that and buy burning oil instead so I could charge the car. The system is odd.

Give it time, you can actually get some cheap older EVs now but with very limited range and not really that usable give it another 5 or 6 years and you will get a lot more hybrids on the second hand older car market, but it will be quite a few more years after that before reasonable full EVs start to come down in price. Given the sales figures even those being sold at the moment will form a very limited supply of lower cost second had cars in 10 years time.
When I replaced my hybrid (which I got because the price was right) I went for a petrol car and having recently replaced that, another petrol car due to economics and being a cash buyer rather than leasing, but company car drivers would normally be nuts to not have a hybrid or full EV and if leasing, depending upon what you are looking for, there is sometimes not much difference between and EV and ICE.

If this is true and if something suitable for the uk comes along, like this with a 500 mile (400 miles is usable but 500 is what my diesel can do) range and big Ford transits and sprinter sized vans can do it too not only 96 miles and can be fully recharged in 20 mins then I will fully believe battery electric cars are a viable option. And they don't cost 10000-15000+ more than thier internal combustion engined counter parts not including government subsidies and free fuel.
This is the reason I am wanting to go back old school.
I would rather have a 70year old vehicle than something brand new which I cant touch to repair.
Even with 17 years in the trade I wouldnt want to be poking around too much into a ev.
But can see the techs which can/do being the only guys to make real money in years to come.
