electric boxes on stud walls question?

when designing the circuits for shed and workshops unusually ask what they have now, put in enough sockets for that, then half on top. Doesn't work out much more and they are always thankful when i suggest that they will probably buy more tools and equipment and it will get frustrating having to unplug things all the time

Example, I'll have 3 angle grinders set up for cutting, grinding and linishing, normally have a couple plugged in at the same time.

use the kis rule . keep it simple. just drop the wires and back boxes in before its boarded .cheapest and neatest .why fanny on with a load of surface fix stuff

when i am welding i usually have at least one welder, 2 grinders, 700watt drill most times, a jigsaw occasionally. Would be a pain having to unplug the grinders every few minutes to swap between them.

i git fed up of having to swap between lathes and mill so just hardwired them through an isolator on each one

We always put sockets under benches in the engineering\fab shop, so cables don't lay over the work surface & no reaching across bench to plug in, extension cables are the work of the Devil

just a note but extension leads are just that, supposed to be used to extend a circuit as a last resort, not supposed to be used in order to turn one socket into 4. also be aware of the cable size on an extension lead and the length of the lead. not a good idea to use a long lead with a high load

Im now thinking 4 13amp double sockets and 2 16amp sockets (to have the 2 welders always plugged in) on the wall that has my 8x4 table.

And a double wherever my drill press/ chopsaw will go so no extension leads.

Need to actually plan where everything is going now, the outside is near enough done apart from painting and felting.

plan where everything needs to be, and be aware of how long the cables are on each thing so you know where the sockets need to be.

then have atleast one properly rated socket for each appliance, and a few more for luck.

outdoor sockets are good, i have a few in the garden. Make life easier.

with lighting there are charts on the net somewhere to work out how many lumens you need for a given space with various colour walls, and then you can get lighting to suit going by the lumen output of the tubes/bulbs. I don't look at light wattage now, just the lumen output.

obviously make sure its all rcd protected but as you are using a proper sparky that will all be done anyway

I find under the front edge of the workbench to be best for this. Easy to change plugs, and keeps the cables off.

well when you get a buzz from a worn flex on something you will appreciate rcds. Ive never had issue with them. If they are put in correctly they are fine.

you wouldnt be saying that if u knew someone that had been electrocuted at 17 year old using a drill on site and someone ran over the extension lead and had no protection. or u caught the live wire and was holding the earth and fortunately one was fitted and im still here to tell the tale. powertools rarely give eath leakage problems its mainly elecronic gear and autotransformers

I'd had my fair share of shocks, but from my IT side of things, I've grown to hate the damn things! RCD trips in the middle of the night, next you know is an half hour later when the UPS fails!

i had a buzz from a soldering iron 3 weeks into my time, rcd went before the fuse in the plug. Still ended up in hospital with burns on hand and numbness in my arm. Electricity isn't fun when it goes wrong, take all the protection you can get, it will not hesitate to kill you without warning, no playing, no foreplay, just dead. Some of us have been lucky and got away with it, and in the case of me and bs it was more down to the rcd than to luck

I agree entirely rcds are there for a reason, I've had a few close ones and without them I would be fried chicken by now! As said there arnt that many appliances that leak any more so should be fine!

Wrong idea Cyber, there is no such thing as a nuisance trip with an RCD, the most dangerous part of an RCD is that they don't trip when required.
When the are correctly specified, correctly installed and correctly utilised, they are life saving devices.
