In case anyone has any pearls of wisdom......
My stepdad had to be taken in a hurry to Morriston Hospital last Wednesday 19th evening. Lower spine compression affecting his nerves etc. He'd had sciatica for 4-months then the previous night his waterworks refused to function.
Emergency back op to relieve pressure on discs/nerves.
(He's 83, been as sedentary as he could manage for decades tbh, so while his health hadn't been bad considering - he's not in great fettle. Type 2 diabetes, stents, and the usual age maladies (plus a bit overweight, poor muscle mass in legs esp, and fading mobility before the sciatica slowed his movements from "snail" to "glacial").
The General Anaesthetic and the even more sedentary week on his back, plus the OP (which was successful in that no more sciatica) - seems to have left other issues (catheter, & atm bowel function only once "properly & unaided" & nothing since release this Tuesday eve (25th).
He's also got a great deal of discomfort at the base of his oesophagus which is making eating and drinking painful so he's barely consuming much..... & to top it off he's now on a walking frame.
Plus.... he lives in an old house 3 miles from the village, and while his granddaughter & partner live next door, & us 3 miles away.... they work long hours & shifts, and we work full-time, so he's got no one at home with him most of the time.
So to summarise - he's 83, barely mobile, has issues with bladder & bowel, has pain & issues eating & drinking, seems somehow more confused, and has been turfed out of hospital with no Care Plan, no Physio or regular visits except we are told a District Nurse visit once a week (who we have heard nothing from).
My thinking is he should under his current state and his home situation - not been seen as fit for being released, and should have remained in the health care system at least until some proper assessments & care/support infrastructure was in place.
We are juggling things in crisis management atm - but that is not sustainable... in any case without his "rear plumbing" working v soon - I see we'll have to take him to Hospital again.
I'm not up to speed on this malarkey, but I'm thinking they've just punted him out the door cos they are swamped, without going through due process?
