EGR valves why?

Quick question, was the (webasto type) pre heater functional?

Sometimes, I had fitted a remote so I could preheat the coolant, shortly after the Webasto stopped working completely and then magically fixed itself a few weeks later

I had one 30 years ago 11 stud with 1300 GT valves and springs .
It was cracked between the valve seats so was just scrapped

Coincidentally, one of my jobs today was to replace the inlet manifold as the port deactivation valves were intermittently faulting, as per usual, due to a build-up of soot and sludge.

I'd already started the clean-up before I thought to take a photo, it's a 2016 vehicle with 62k on it, used as a kids taxi and shopping trolley, so short, cold engined journeys. The EGR has to be removed for access so is checked over, no DTC's stored and functions as expected, the cooler is a bit sooty but servicable

Reminds me of trying to clean out a Td4 (Freelander 1) intake manifold.

Spent my life tinkering with oily things, but I have never known filth like that.

Then we would look at replacement rather than cleaning - however, there are DPF cleaning fluids that we use on less blocked ones - at worst, they get a good blast with an airline under an exhaust extractor pipe...
That one was on a 2014 vehicle with 38k miles, the driver had never been out of the county...

More soot & sludge from the same vehicle:-

The throttle butterfly was covered in a Ashphalt-like sludge which just peeled off, the soot came off relatively easily once soaked in the parts washer for a few minutes.

The carbon isn't the problem....

That is SCR reductant that has blocked the EGR cooler, no cleaning option, replace only.
I think it was an average mileage vehicle (~15k a year), the problem was caused by the position of the metering valve, not the SCR system per-se.

ETA_ the cleaner we use is Wynns off-car DPF cleaner, diluted 1:1 with hot water & left in the cooler for an hour or so.

You really can't beat van drivers for their ability to continue driving despite various warnings being on and a distinct lack of power

The main feed connector needs a clean occasionally as the glow plug draws a bit of current at low “cold” battery voltage.

Contractor at our place had an expensive German sport SUV thingie- wifey used it to take kids 2 mile to school and pick them up . . if failed to proceed after not too long due to being rather bunged up.

He started having to use it to come to work to clear it out. Eventually dealer bought it back I understand

We probably change 1-2 a month due to blockage of the port deactivation flaps, to the point where we have the manifold & gaskets etc. in stock... We're a 12-bay dealership, the Ford one across the road is 26 bay and the Audi one up the road is 14 bay to give you an idea of scale
They mostly all fit the same usage pattern, occasionally there'll be a actuator failure on a high-mileage vehicle but those can be changed relatively easily.
We don't get involved with commercials at all but from previous experience, car drivers react to a warning light (mostly within a couple of days), van drivers see it as something 'the yard' will have to deal with at the end of the week / month / when things get a bit quieter.
We can usually gauge how blocked the cooler is by looking at live values of the exh. back pressure sensor & inlet boost pressure sensor with the engine running and the diverter flap moved manually.

What a conflict. Part of me wants a car with everything deleted, nothing but air fed into the engine and exhaust a clear route to fresh air. Oh, and mapped to give the best mpg/performance possible without severely impacting reliability. Simple, reliable, light, economical. Lower CO2 total life cost.

But I also don't particularly want to dump out more harmful pollutants to human health than is absolutely necessary.

Currently run a banger of a diesel that escaped the majority of post combustion treatments. But seriously considering a small batteried plug in hybrid next time around if I can afford it. Should be able to do the majority of town trips on battery while having a decent tank and ok mpg for long runs. Hardly a simple machine though.

It makes me wonder what MPG a small modern diesel car without any emissions rubbish on it could do. I had a 1988 vauxhall nova 1.5 diesel non turbo and that would do 65MPG long runs or short always 65. so a modern one should be doing 80mpg at the least

Never really understood the fuss over egr valves on diesels, they only work at idle,as soon as you touch the throttle the things shut.

the sespit man was here a little while back , he pointed out the new truck he has, and look at the inside of the exhaust , had about 55k on it and the exhaust was sparkling clean inside still , he reckons all the emission stuff now on the air coming out is cleaner than the air going in ? can this be true

Thinking about it, I've seen a couple of high-milers with sheared bolts on the manifold and as you say, the seal pushed out of the side, vans probably have a higher percentage of time spend on boost due to the mass of the vehicle and the driving 'style'.

Not sure why, but I probably wouldn't rely on a cesspit man's nose to encourage me to smell his exhaust to find out...
