Educate me on approximate chroming costs? : )

Ive posted this photo before -

The white painted hotplate lids are scruffier in reality than they are in the photo.

Whilst looking at some other stuff today, it occurred to me that it would smarten up the whole unit if just the lids were chromed.

Im talking the white bit - the handles on the front come off. There's also a small bit at the back (part of the hinge) that would be done also.


Can someone with more experience of chroming than me (i have zero, so its not hard!) enlighten me as to what sort of cost i should be looking at?

And i can obviously prep the things myself - what sort of finish would a plating place want (ie trying to keep my costs down by diy'ing as far as i can)

Hello Julian,

quite a lot of work I would say. Firstly the enamel will need to be removed, possibly by blasting?. I assume you want a bright mirror chrome finish which means the metal needs to be mirror polished first, was that what you were thinking of doing?
I'm sorry I can't help with prices but I would think quite expensive unless you can do the preparation?

I used Peterborough plating for a small chroming job. They were pretty helpful with just some pictures to go by. Cost £70 to do 9x 15mm high letters and one handle.

If it's cast iron you'll be lucky to get anyone to look at chroming it.

it will be like a bullet if it sees a cat or a rabbit to get those tops good enough for chroming would be nearly impossible .as said u need a mirror finish on them before chroming

you could make some polished stainless covers to fit over them. Probably last a lot longer.
I often look at stainless frying pans, metal trays etc and try to think of uses that they could be put to. So far the only thing I've managed to use is the small cups which I use for mixing little quantities of paint, and a small tray which I glued a magnet to, useful as a magnetic nut/ bolt/ tool holder.

Of course he does - sometimes we light the fire in the other room.
