Just had edf offering £100 of credit if I fit an intelligent meter - what next...
Exactly. Why not ? My consumption of electricity is monitored and my direct debits changed as necessary. No nasty bills.
But I'm in France.

better than the letter dad got, saying its now compulsory to have one fitted,Just had edf offering £100 of credit if I fit an intelligent meter - what next...
Tinfoil, pure tinfoil. The energy companies have more money than they know what to do with. Higher prices just mean higher profits at the same margin (but since gas prices are actually falling, that's a moot point).
The need for "smart" meters is to monitor consumption so that they can target a population to maximise profit even more efficiently. For example, offer you discounted prices when they know you don't need it to make the "average" look lower. They can also use these devices to disconnect people who can no longer afford to pay these inflated prices.
What next? Well, inevitably, the law will change to allow these companies to max out the cost to non-smart users and only offer a "discount" to customers who succumb to the control of a smart meter.
What gets me is the "rule" which states once your property has had a smart meter, it can NEVER not have one... WTF is that all about...

Yes about the money they have spare, and prices should be going down. But the g.ment created ofgem to stop this....
The "need for smart meters" is a government directive. They can target me all they like, it won't change my usage patters, unless its to my benefit.
They've never been used to disconnect anyone - yet...
I've resisted until now, purely because there were no advantages, £100 is an advantage, I think I'll take them up on it. Before I started building hydro turbines I spent quite a bit of time doing "energy management" - I learnt a fair bit about the supply industry, and how greedy they are. However, metering your usage is not a dirty horrible deed - I don't believe the hype they claim for them, but if it saves me getting on a chair now and again I have nothing against it. Now, if I can get them to read and pay me for my export for free I'll be onto a winner.
Or chose not to read them?
