I have decided to start collecting Eclipse tools. It's not intended to be a big thing, but I thought they would look rather nice on the garage wall, and they're quite cheap at the moment so why not. Eclipse were the first company to introduce the full handle type of hacksaws we know as standard today.
If you don't like tool museums or mild OCD-type behavior then this probably isn't the kind of project for you!
It all started about a year ago when I bought three Eclipse catalogues - one for the tools, one for magnets and one for the magnetic tools. They're from around the 1958-60 period.
The magnets are hard to find and magnets still command good prices, so that's something I'll leave for another day. I've started at the beginning of the catalogue.
I have a 20T and until the blade wore out it was a daily user. The pattern shown in this catalogue isn't the first - there's a nicer, rounder design which a friend has and which I might try to obtain...
I've managed to buy a 56 sheet hacksaw for building materials - it's a bit bigger than the more common 55. I've also got a 66 coming - I dislike using these saws, but it's for the mini-museum, so needs must.
I used to have a 60B and I'm annoyed that I sold it, but it was part of a trade when I bought the Samson No1 angle bender, so its sacrifice was not in vain. I will however need to find another one for the collection. Here's a picture of it before I sold it
I've spotted a 40PG for sale and I might buy it - the pistol grips are harder to come by, they don't seem to have been sold for long before Eclipse 'finished the loop' and linked the handle casting to the frame. This concludes the models I have from these pages.
