Do you not think it's a bit like Google, Autotrader, Rightmove etc?
Once very established it's difficult for others to cut into that sector
Well not really as it's obvious that eBay don't want second hand items and private sellers any longer.

This is interesting. A few years ago I stopped using eBay for selling but still buy lots through eBay. For small items selling through eBay with eBay & PayPal fees I just run them to our local tip; it's less hassle.
For selling though I've enjoyed great success through Gumtree; the two biggest items I sold were around£1,200 each sold with no problems whatsoever and I was paid in cash on collection. Money laundering doesn't bother me because I never wash my money. Most items are totally free of selling fees on Gumtree; I think there are fees regarding properties but I could be wrong. I've been messed around a couple of times by time wasters on Gumtree but on the whole I've saved a lot of money over the years.
I've given things away through Gumtree; the most recent a fully working 32" TV with a pair of TP Links; within minutes I thought my email inbox was going into meltdown so had to quickly delete the advert then I simply took the first email and it was collected by a very grateful guy; a number of emails offered to pay £20 with immediate collection; I like to play fair and be honest.
I placed a fully restored Suffolk Colt petrol mower on Gumtree which struggled to sell; I don't just place the add and leave it; if after say a week the item doesn't sell I delete the add then simply relist it; on the third attempt a couple of guys drove up from Lincs and they were absolutely delighted with the mower saying they were amazed it hadn't been snapped up; I then sold another petrol mower and the guy who bought it lived just up the village; I'm not a dealer I was having a declutter.
Other things I've successfully sold through Gumtree have been a DeVilbiss industrial sprayer; an Apollo sprayer; Hydrovane compressor and a huge Startrite Volant 24" industrial bandsaw; I might have lucky but apart from the odd timewaster Gumtree selling works for me.
Having sold all my big machines I could then go mad filling the vacated space with more smaller machines; I've now only got three lathes whereas I used to have five but at least I can now move around in the workshop (Just).

same here. when it comes to postage charge I just add 10%
wrappings etc ,postage comes to 8.80 plus 10% =£9.70.
if they dont like it then dont buy its that simple.
if they want to pick up thats fine but cash only.

Oh for sure they don't...but at least they let you filter out the Chinese sellers who pretend to be in the UK. !)

What does amaze me is how these companies can buy up the market & not be investigated by the Competition & Markets Authority

never had a problem with punters claiming they never got it.
I always send with recorded delivery and needs to be signed for.
a couple tried it but got thrown out as soon as I put post of proof and signed .

I'm talking more about the pricks who say something is damaged or not working. Had some **** wipe buy a brand new sander off me. Use it for the job they intended & returned with a PayPal claim saying it was faulty

not sold anything that can be broken. all my stuffs I sell on ebay are grab rails/racks.
if I was selling goods like yours bank payments only. or cash on pick ups.
some did try to pick up and pay through p/pal . nope cash on pick up or post.
