found a murex mig on ebay,seemed right money so asked question `could i see it working on thick+thin if i bring steel`?reply was something like `description says what it will and won`t weld,if unsure,don`t bid,this is priced to sell,no timewasters`!!!!.does anyone consider that i`ve asked an unreasonable question?

Looks in nice clean condition given it's age (1980's) & will knock the spots off your Topmig 150, but you would have to travel down south to collect it & the seller's reply to your question would have put me off straight away!
Check out Item No:220082577614. Local to you in Manchester & looks like it just wants a good clean.
Bear in mind though with any older second hand 'bargain', you could be into the same amount of money paid in repair bills!

sorry,reply actually says `spec says it will weld 3mm steel,if in doubt dont bid.item is placed to sell,no timewasters.you`d still want to see it working though would`nt you?after reading through a few threads on here i`ve learnt that what spec says+what it does are different.

3mm is a fair claim for a good quality machine like that. SIP claim 5mm on their Migmate 130! The murex has bags more guts in it & will far outperform your current machine.

thanks for that,have put it in `watching`.that reply did put me off right away!
know what your sayin about second hand stuff,just dont know whether to try sorting crappy sip out or just buy another.whats the situation with murex spares ie price/availability?

Generally good but can be pricey (most manufacturers are on spares). Not sure about the availability of things like circuit boards on older stuff like that, but I can get them repaired anyway so never really a problem.
What's the problem with your Topmig, usual wire feed problems?

yes the usual,but i have modded the feed roller tension bracket,but one of my reel bushes is missing +no suppliers that i can get to stock sip parts+all on net dont seem to list them.really need to spk to some body to explain what bits i need to a least get the basics right

A new machine of similar quality would be around £500, but it would cost you 50 quid in juice collecting it!, and could cost you best part of another 100 quid if the circuit board or other major part was to fail, so I wouldn't be giving much more than £200 for it really.
Murex are very reliable machines but Rolls Royce's need repairing.

ok,thanks for your advice,will bear it in mind.if i dont get the murex+stick with the sip,would you be able to supply the reel bushes for it?where are you based(shop)?don`t really do much welding,just bits of repairs on my karts but it would be great to be able to do it nicely(+ maybe do a couple of jobs to pay for repairs/another welder).

Reel bushes? Spares are not available for the actual wire feed unit (apart from new feed rollers) & it's supplied as a complete gearbox/motor unit.
I take it you have done all the usual torch servicing, ie.new liner, neck liner etc.?

no not the feed rollers(although they needed modding).its the plastic bushes that sit on either side of the wire reel that you tension up to stop the reel spinning when you release the trigger,i seem to have one missing so cant put any tension on the wire reel.if i keep it,gonna replace liner,shroud,earth cable+then fit modded wire feed tensioner+see how it is then.can you put a price on parts for me?

Sip themselves have a Technical Dept and if you push them they will supply spares from it.
