First off, thanks to all you guys and your info I have read over the past weeks. I have tried arc welding before, a lot of years ago and only ever had success at bodging things. I Have a half decent mig so never really got the stick welder out as there was no need. But I now need to some welding outside and mig just doesn't work in the wind so I need to learn stick. So last night I dusted off my clarke 145ED and had a bash, the wife had her sisters, aunties, mum and all the kids over so I thought it was a good chance to escape!!! I had already dried out some rods I had, some Murex 6014 3.2mm. I whacked the clarke up to what it said on the box and kept increasing the current with every stick I burned to see what difference it would make. I have atached a pic below to let you see how I got on. Personally speaking I am rather pleased with myself. This is the first time I have used a stick welder for about 6 years, and even then I was really bad at it and always had no penetration and loads of slag inclusion. I could stick things together but they would break apart at the first sight of a hammer. The first weld is at the top and the last at the bottom. You will notice some breaks in some of the welds, the wee clarke kept tripping out, and one of them is where I set fire to my jumper
Would appreciate any criticism.
