Earthing requirements for ethernet to a shed

I'm planning to run an ethernet (cat5e) cable from a hub in the house out to the garage/shed - about 10m distance.
I can't use WIFI as the shed is steel lined (long story).

My house is on a TNC-S earth.
The shed is TT earthed - so separated from house.

Power is supplied via a 6mm 3 core SWA

Do i have to make any considerations as to earthing on the ethernet cable?

I've never given it a thought, if ethernet becomes an issue you have much bigger problems

I did the same from house to office, no idea how the house or office are earthed.

Mine runs over a far longer distance than that and I have no issues that I'm aware of. And highly naughtily it runs in the same underground 110 mm duct as 415 V 3 phase, telephone cables and 25 mm blue mdpe water pipe - -oh and in some places 100 psi compressed air in 25 mm blue mdpe pipe !

Get a cable/socket tester if you haven’t got one. Not very expensive.

Get the type with a bit that goes at each end.

No. I definitely do not - and cannot - export the house earth when it's a TNS-C system.

It arrived yesterday. £3 from CPC. I bought a conduit cutter and some 4mm test leads at the same time to make the order up to a tenner.

Tnsc would just be pme?

Yes. PME (I think).
It has to be a TT otherwise I'd need to run a 10mm earth back to the house (rather than the 6mm)

beaverhouse! I just realised. If I'd bought 4 core, I could have used two of the cores for earth - which would have made it a 12mm earth

Just do it as TT, think they call it an island?
Not a sparky but I did my moccopa and fitted around 2k meters

For your application, it should be ok, as all the domestic routers are double insulated and the possibility of the shed and house having a different earth potential are slim, unless you are close to an electrified railway, grid substation, or pme'd overhead distribution post.
However, in the industry, its either insert a very expensive isolation box or tie and bond absolutely everything together, it can become a nightmare when you have data running all over a large site, it only needs one stray path to cause havoc.

Copper Ethernet is *supposed* to be galvanically isolated through a transformer at each end of the link, though that's all changing with power over Ethernet...
I'm a great fan of fibre optic when isolation matters, and 10/100/1000 Mbit media convertors aren't a fortune, nor are the SFP optics to plug into 'em.

I just ran external cat5 down the fence line of the garden. Stuck a wall box each end and use patch leads indoors to the router and in the workshop to whatever needs it. Must 10 years ago and no problems so far. I even run two pairs down the same wire and it works just fine.

I've got multiple network cables crossing between 3 different buildings, each with their own mains 3 phase supply and separate earths

I did think about it... but then decided to try it and see... never had a problem with it

different things will be on different phases too... I assume the reason that isn't a problem is because all the electronic stuff runs from DC?

Just thinking out loud here but wouldn’t it be possible to just mount a wifi receiver on the outside of the garage instead of running cables?

Interesting that your WiFi doesn't reach, I have good coverage from my steel workshop back to the house router though multiple double brick walls. Distance would be at least 40-50 feet. It works on both 2.4 and 5 Ghz but is a lot better on 2.4 - have you tried forcing your router to that mode? Router is a Fritz!box 7490.

i have 2x nighthawk 1400 - one as a transmitter, one as a booster (about10ft from the shed) no signal on either 2.4 or 5ghz.

i dunno how "line of sight" wifi is, but i suspect that the steel lining, and the steel roof, is acting like a faraday cage.
although strangely i can get a mobile signal.
