earthing my welding bench

hi all peeps,

im wanting to earth my welding bench. its placed center of my garage and wondering what is the best way of earthing it. also what size cable would i need. anyone got any ideas?

Earth it to what? why? for welding?

We weld an M10 bolt onto benches at work, fit a matching lug to the work return and secure it with a couple of nuts.

Stops this happening!

That looks like someone's been 'flashing off' lengthy welding wire rather than snipping it off?

Must remember to get a few pics of the "sculptures" produced by the welders who like to warm the welders up with a quick squirt before starting the jobs!

I run a short weld on some scrap to check for gas flow (it's been a problem in the past) and the settings (these seem to wander) before the weld propper.

are u meaning the earth clamp of welder or just bonding the steelwork off the bench back to the mains electrical supply for some reason ??

it used to be a regulation equapotential bonding of all exposed steelwork together. but no longer aplies if u want extra safety its well worth fitting a double pole rcd with 30 milliamp trip in the line to your workshop

screwfix sell them about 30 quid but u will get one of ebay less than 18 i would think with a cheap enclosure

theres a brand new one on e bay an mk 80 amp with 30 ma trip . 20 quid just buy a cheap enclosure for it from any electrical wholesalers .type in ebay 30ma rcd ps theres loads just put a few daft bids in

That was recommended with the first TIG (transformer) I had. It supposedly helped avoid upsetting sensitive electronics with stray EMF off the high frequency. I didn't bother and had no problems but an ally welder on the same estate had to get rid of an old Miller machine - it was crashing computers and dialing out on mobile phones and they tried everything bar a Faraday cage. W/A
