Hi all -new to the forum - so heres my first of many welding questions, Just bought a seally super mig 185 ,its well beaten up and abused but seems to work, the earth cable is hanging on by a couple of threads as is the power cable .Ive got a new earth cable and clamp and have taken the front of the machine and its connected into a crimped flat bar . How can I change the cable can anyone shed any light on it, many thanks del

i have not had that perticular machine to bits but with a photo i can see the problem! what you planing to weld once you have it working?
Ive got a couple of old landrovers which i do a little bits on, i had a small hobby clarke 100e that got stolen out of my garage with about three grands worth of tools , so i bought the seally because it seems to have more dials and controls to make life a bit easier and hopefully i can get over the pidgeon poo stage!

what landrovers you got? have two at the moment a lightweight and most of a series 3 swb (spares for light weight)

earth wire help
hi del,
I have a supermig 195, not far off what you have, i have fixed my earth wire this afternoon, so while i can remember i will mention what i did.
The solid wire the earth lead connects to is from the output coil ,its actually aluminium .
My earth wire is 25mm squared cable, i used a 'butt' crimp to connect the two together, a large crimping tool is the ideal to sqeeze the two ends, but i didnt have one, so with a large pair of pliers at hand i managed to clamp the ends together.
Soldering the two ends would give a more solid joint, but normal soldering wire appears not to stick to aluminium, a special aluminium grade is needed.( a chap on ebay sells a few meters of it for under ten pounds ).
Another way would be to get a battery terminal connecor (just had a look on halfords site, there 4 pounds to buy ), saw off the round connector bit on the side, so alls left is a metal tube with the two screws either end, and use this a 'monster' wiring connector.
Keep the wires nice and shiny with some emery paper for a good connection,
and along with a few good layers of insulating tape you should be good to go my friend!.

sounds a good way of doing it to me. Mole grips can work well for crimps
Here are some pictures of teh inside of the welder. The earth wire is crimped into a flat metal oblong. How would I re-attatch the new earth cable into that block ?

no problem my friend, just be aware that the solid wire is a bit inflexible when it comes to bending it , my first go had the wire snap straight off!
2nd time round was ok.
Fit the earth lead to the batt terminal firstly then the solid ally wire, your pics show how exactly how mine was!
