E Tech hybrid...I've been learning!

Been reading about the Renault e-tech hybrid system (been around a while but never got my attention until now!)...at first I thought I had mis-read the article...my first thought was how on earth can a gearbox work without a convention clutch!

I can see how they could do without a synchromesh...we've all been there I'm sure!

Seems like quite a clever design....well until a sensor fails and the dog clutch smashes together at 5k rpm of course .

Anyone on here worked on them or know much about them?

unless it's pre 1970/80 ur onto a looser......there were some great cars by them but they all come under the head of Euro Trash now.....
Dont get me wrong there's some great idea'sfrom men in sheds but the accountants over there insist on most car parts made from CHEESE, Gromit....hahaha...

I've had to change more mechanical clutches than electrical sensors on cars though . . .

(although I hasten to add, not usually once fully in my ownership).

Probably cost....what they have is a retuned petrol engine mated to a stripped back gearbox.

Stripping bits out the box then allowed them to get the electric motors in and fit the lot in the space a standard engine and box would occupy.

Quite a neat idea I think....it's basically a cheap way of doing hybrid.

Thats only relevent if you are not controlling the interaction of the two masses.

Anyway what we need is a motor/braking unit on each wheel and an optomised petrol engined generator under the bonnet. This would be a very neat and tidy way to do it. No hydraulics either. Just a few wires and a central vehicle control unit (CVCU).

Yes, but we are going to go a few steps further with our wheel unit (WU) which will also have steering and suspension control as well. The game plan is to only have one kind of WU to be used on all four corners!

I don't see that as a problem.
The locomotive motors are part of the axle, and ride on suspension.
No need to wait, the tech is already here.

Yes, but do they have Anticipatary Suspension Activation (ASA). This works by checking the surface ahead of the wheel to spot Pot Holes and other surface defects, thus ensuring a perfectly stable and smooth ride.

How about trying walking first before the ultimate eh ?
The market has spoken with dismal EV sales, people want simple & reliable.
And cheap

Well for better or worse I'm in for a penny in for a pound!!!

I went ahead and bought myself the Dacia Jogger hybrid (with the e tech system from Renault)!

This car is mainly to be used for my hobbies (DIY/allotment and such)....it needed to be big and cheap but hopefully not stupid!

So far I'm pretty pleased with it...as in it's both big and cheap . I would loved to have had another V70/XC70 D5 but they're non ULEZ and I'm not paying £12 per day!!

Main selling point....it's got these buttons for the climate controls...I think they're a new innovation .

Oh and it's got a button for turning off the drunk passenger (also known as lane keep assist!).

Even if you are controlling them physics still says it makes your ride, handling, grip, transient behaviour and NVH worse.
That and packaging space with the size and complexity of modern brakes and hubs makes it a PITA.

Far easier to just pop them inboard with a driveshaft.

I'm already impressed with the mpg...57mpg driving short trips to the shops!

It's 7 seats...3rd row removable by general public...second row removable if you know what a spanner is for...which (the internet says) gives 2mx1mx1m boot ..will see about that!

Well so far I've done just over 300 miles in the jogger....it's still consistently returning 57mpg!

I just came back down to London on the A1 driving mostly at the speed limit (officer!) and I'd expected it to drop as the average speed was higher but it's been pretty consistent.

Think the next test needs to be to brim the tank and then check the trip computer isn't being economical with the mileage and the truth!

What's the word regarding Hybrids & our new Govt's determination to implement "Pay-per-Mile"? London is likely to be seeing this extra burden on motorists first?

So far, all I've seen is to introduce it (to start with, thin end of the wedge etc) on EV's (they want to replace the lost tax revenue from people who've switched away from ICE to EV - to avoid charges ).
Who didn't see that coming!

(The Welsh Govt/Senedd who have been run by the same lot for 25-years, have had PPM & other "encouragements" to force the ordinary person out of private transport, buried about 40-pages into their Manifesto for several years..... so I'm not looking to the future with hope & confidence).

I think if they implement it on EVs that's the end of the EV market in the UK!

Been trying to work out costs on the Jogger Vs EV....on long trips the Jogger we suspect is quite a bit cheaper due to public chargers being expensive!

Adding pay per mile or VED just makes the issue worse. It was so nice driving home and not even having to think about range!
