Dyson extractor

Right, I've just about had enough of the mess left in my shop by this bloody chopsaw!

The missus has just bought a new Hoover for indoors, I wonder if I hook up the old Dyson (which still works OK apart from a split hose I've had to repair/replace three times now in two years) would there be any fire risk?

The chopsaw has a vent at the rear for an extractor, but only really meant for woodchippings, I guess? Would hot metal sparks off the grinding wheel getting sucked into the guts of it cause any prolems, there are at least a couple of fabric-type filters. Any advice appreciated.

i won't recommend it for metal. what type of saw is it if you are useing tct blades might not be as bad as they are cooler cutting

Would it not be possible to use a metal collection-container (before the Dyson); as is used with ash vacuuming attachments for woodstoves?

A metal tub (e.g a 20 ltr. oil-drum) with clipped-on lid, an 'in an out' pipe, spark-arrestor mesh (e.g a few layers of door 'fly-screen' metal-mesh) and making the ash flow and precipitate `round a sharp corner seems to be all they consist-of.

Agree on the Dyson build quality: two motors, two beater-bars, an undertray, a clutch, dozens of belts and a new hose...all in just three years.
Despite what is claimed; if you don`t keep that circular blue filter clean (monthly in my case with three dogs) there IS a marked loss of suction.

I made a collection tank from an old coldwater tank (from a skip). I use some car doorseal round the top and a chipboard lid. The vacuum in the tank held the lid firmly in place.

if its a dyson all parts are guaranteed for 5 years so why bother jus phone em up and get a new hose for free . thats all we do with ours

I bought mine just before the warranty was suddenly extended to 5 years.......all of my Dyson`s failures have been outside of warranty.

That's an idea, I could make use of something similar I've got lying around. Do you fill it with water or just leave it empty to collect the bits?

I left mine empty - I was using it to collect blasting grit so there was no risk of fire.

You could perhaps put 6 ins of water in the bottom and have the inlet below the water level.

Cheers rtbcomp. It's an old stainless steel sink so filling with water won't be a problem.

I made a wet intermediate box ...15 mtrsd of 2 1/2 in ribbed on outside & home made adaptor and std vax tube on dry side . i used drain pipe for the inlet and took it to 9 inch off the bottom of a screw top barrel , took the vax extract 3 inch from top of lid and put three lumps of green scotch brite pad over the end using elastic bands .


Mode of use was to 2/3 fill with water and screw on the top ..all input went in the water .solids dropped out , the scotchbrite filtered most of the wetness but the vax is a wet & dry job so tended to collect the remainder of moisture .
I used this vacuum system for a year , sucking ground out mortar , raised up dust and general vacuuming whilst completely refurbishing bungalow .

Can you still get the flexi exhause tube for the chop saw end and build a similar set up .

So long as you can attach /detatch the tubes easily it should be good to go .

The barrel was about 30 litres and came from someone who used the contents for cleaning their swimming pool. Because it was a small barrel it was easy to move it around the bungalow on a three castor wheeled skate board and it was easy to lift it off for empty, clean & reharging .

I sold it recently at a carboot for £40 which is nigh on the cost of it and the wall chaser from Aldi .. (got a full rewire of 48 dbl skt and light for a 3 dble bed bungalow out of it ).
