DVD to hard disk

I have a few old DVDs like The Sopranos box set that I would like to save in a digital format that means I can keep them on a hard drive/memory stick/sd card and watch them on my tablet via SD or on the TV via the USB socket.

I no longer have a DVD player and will have to use an old laptop to do anything with the DVDs as my current one doesn't have a drive!

Whats the best software for this - preferably a free and not virus ridden download?!

How about an external DVD drive for about £20 from Amazon?
Or, as usual, have I got it back to front?

I've been know to download content that I legally "own" before, as it's quicker than finding the dvd.

I would suggest just downloading the content. Some teenager on pirate bay will have way more skill at encoding content than either you or I, and, if you own the hard copies, I believe you will be acting without fault.

I may have done that but since the demise of moviebox/showbox, reliable sources have been harder to find...

I just want to put them in a digital format that can run from a hard disk. I have a laptop that can be used to read them but a little memory stick is far less bulky than an external hard drive plus the dvds themselves!

You need something like handbrake and libdvdcss both are open source and look on wiki for advice. handbrake is a good programme and both are free

use other channels and you will drop the file right down to 300mb or as high as 800mb

as goes for the above dont bother ( spam )

ive had the files for years and also much more ripping to mp4 isnt as easy as you may think

We used to use Dvd shrink to rip films for hdd storage, if you want to rip to store on an external drive remember you need to store just the episodes not all the extras and menus, these days we use handbrake and watch with vlc player or kodi on a raspberry.pi talking yo the server

dvd shrink saves as another file system in dvd format mpeg2 plays like a dvd and normally ripped into less than 4gb to burn onto a disc

the one handy thing was that you could rip twice for a smaller file

dvd shrink stopped working with digital encryption so an alternative program was needed

other alternatives was used like clone dvd

there was many alternatives out there but there was one better dvd to avi

dont bother looking for them the new updates to them was beaten by the encryption and hard to get nowadays

I've ripped many a DVD to file using a variety of software. I keep a standalone PC specifically for this with XP on it. There were tons of good software available for ripping, converting films & music for XP. Programs like DVD Shrink ,DVD Santa, DVD Fab etc ,etc. However , I do use a ripper on my W10 laptop called Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate 5. This is very good and fast too. and will rip a DVD to a variety of output extension's like , mpg, mov, but there is only one you would want to use and that's .mp4. I must admit I never saved the menus either , I never saw the point of keeping other language's , subtitle's etc . I just ripped the actual film in English.

Kodi run on a pi has changed things so much in my house, no more dvd players or media storage, i still keep a modified PS3 to play discs but most of the media is in storage or been moved on.
