Dust in my eye

Irritated!

Yesterday I was helping customer to take black bags of soil, and hedge sweepings, to the local tip. As I opened one of the bags, there was a lot of dust, possibly from the person next to me, chucking stuff in the pit.

Right eye has been irritated ever since. Cant see any dirt. I dont really want to have it poked about with or scraped at hospital! But its not got any better over night.

What to do?

You could try flushing it, but in all honesty I would go to the hospital. I had a bit of metal I was cutting hit my cheek & bounce up under my safety glasses & stick in my eye. No amount of flushing I did removed it & they only got half out, giving me some ointment to put in overnight & go back 2 days later to have the rest removed.

I assume you have already given it an eyebath, @Kram ? Also, lie on your back and get someone to flood it with eyewash. Use the whole bottle. And take an antihistamine: sometimes the irritation / reaction lasts after the foreign body has gone.

Go to chemist for eye ointment. It’s more gel like so lubricates the eye stopping it getting irritated and speeding up healing

Probably just scratched - which can take ages to heal......I've only ever known metal lodge in the eyeball....but if after caring for it another 24 hrs it's no better, you'll need a&e (assuming they have an eye dept)

Go to your local minor injuries unit. They prefer to see you sooner rather than later.

I've had lots of stuff in me eye over the years
Just go to A an E or whatever they call it now, they'll have a proper look under magnification to make sure there's nothing stuck in there and give you antibiotic ointment if it's scratched.
Done this loads of times, only once had a bit of grinding spark metal in the eye that was starting to embed itself as I left it for a week, this needed to be removed but was done very efficiently by a Greek doc who was absolutely brilliant, honestly wasn't bad at all.

sooner not after 24 hours , in a day the eye starts to skin over to stop the irritation, making it harder to remove and giving time for infections to start ,,, sooner is way better . A minor scratch can feel like a brick but some lube will sort it out , you only get two eyes so take no chances with them , its way better to spent time in a&e than regret not going for the rest of your life.
