Durable Rattle-Can Satin Black ????

Cant say I have found any paint in a rattle can much use, there`s a lot of thinners in them with very little paint. A small airbrush or touchup spray gun and some decent paint is probably the way to go. I use one for painting frames and chassis`s, virtually no overspray or paint wasted and quick to clean.

whatever you like really..thin it down and try it until it sprays nice

something like some aldi metal paint , 10-20% thinners or white spirit and see you get on , get a big can of gun wash and clean it fully after each use

well yeah it can be as complicated as you like if you say painting cars to a high standard etc

if you just want to try spraying though...bits n bobs in the shed then yes its as easy as that ....try 10% thinner and spray some , if its heavy orange peel and struggling to spray add a little more and so on

Thin it so that it pours like milk consistency.

Fair enough about the spray pattern/size but if you look at the sales blurb they seem to come in two nozzle sizes. The .5mm seems to be a bit of a water pistol with a 40mm spray width so good for spraying tubes etc and the other available 1mm has a spray width of 100mm which is better than any rattle can. On that note I have ordered both because either are going to be useful on some of the toys I am working on.
When they arrive I will test them and report back.

Another problem I had with it was the seal on the nozzle was bad & it would start blowing air bubbles back into the reservoir! I messed around with o-rings until I got it working long enough to get the job finish & never used it again!

Prepping the surface and having a nice warm environment is also important if you care about the finish.

I did a rear door on my 110 in a humid cold environment (barn in the spring in Wales last year) and it's bubbled up although I got the colour match reasonably well. Did some side panels to turn it into a USW this summer in the garden in Surrey and was a very nice sunny day and they've held up very well to scratches and so on. Equally the axle I painted with CIO was done at a similar time and patience and prep is the key to getting a good durable finish.

I've done a few test squares over the last day or so with different methods of preparation and the original Simonize Satin Black I previously complained about.

Zinctec sheet in all cases, cleaned with a scotchbrite pad then IPA wipe then various etch and non etch primers followed by a generous spray paint of the black satin.

By far the best result so far is to sand blast the surface, no other preparation other than blow the dust off, no primer, and spray the Simonize Satin Black on as a generous coating (horizontal sample = no runs). This is the only method from the tests that is proof against me scratching the paint off with a thumb nail the following day.

On smaller bits this is also probably the easiest preparation as well

Sprayed 7 year ago with trade spray cans very little marks on it considering the hackin it gets from turf and logs (don’t take any notice of the 2 missing strips I lost them and never got around to replacing them )

Give them longer. Like a week in an airing cupboard. Takes a while to fully cure.
