We're putting a shed up for ourselves this year and I could do with a level, for digging foundations to depth, as well as setting columns, maybe use for a bit of drainage too - been a few times already where I've borrowed a dumpy and decided I need my own. Just looking at 2nd hand stuff on ebay, nothing fancy, just known good brands.
Whatever I get, it'll be used once or twice a year at most, as paying for proper GPS surveying is really cost-effective.
Usually will be able to get my brother or someone to help out, but I'm thinking it would be really handy for me and for him both, to be able to use it on our own.
- £70 will get me a Leica/Sokkia dumpy level in nice condition
-£250ish will get me an older Trimble/Topcon rotating laser level in average condition
Laser pros:
-1 man operation, and very quick to use
-Frikkin lazor beams
cons:
-expensive
-lots to go wrong
- usually well used and sometimes abused
-need batteries for the level and for a detector
Dumpy pros:
- cheap
- simple
- usually well looked after and in great condition
cons:
- 2 man operation
- slow to use
If i was feeling flusher, I'd just buy a laser and be done with it... but for something that will see a few hours of use per year... also it'll be an older machine with a bit of use on it.
