I met a bloke at a funeral recently, he told me that at the Cape asbestos factory at Purfleet, the apprentices would be chucked in a bin of blue asbestos in their banging out ceremony. Think they are probably all dead now.

Thats genuinely horrific. I suppose we've all heard of the results of horseplay going wrong , there was a famous of an apprentice over here having an airline stuck down the back of his trousers , killed him stone dead.

We used to send the new appy`s for a box of spots for the spot welder, the storeman new about it and had the paper dots from the hole punches in the office. He would give them to the appy and we`d send him back saying we wanted steel spots, we didnt need paper spots for this job. Used to get 2 out of 3 appy`s with that.

the bag over head trick is great, you ask to see how strong they are, loads on youtube like it

On a site i worked a lad was getting married and they stappled him to the wall via his hi viz jacket... he passed out from the staples being too tight and we had to rescue him

the other one that iv seen done is spray someones pint glass with deep heat just the rim and watch in awe as there lips turn inside out. To make it work properly you need to take your shoe off and spray your foot quoting an old injury then muck about twith the can and spray it in the air so they smell it everywhere

reminds me of the Mike Harding story...

He was sent to the stores for a long stand and eventually twigs whats happened and that the store man was in on it.

The storeman was hard of hearing and Mike tells the story of mouthing to him something or other.

The storeman can`t hear or understand and so cranks up his aid several times until mike shouts at him..

The amplified noise is so much that the old boy hits the deck...

Used to work as a maintainace engineer at a meat packing factory . we had a banding machine in for repair ,used to put plastic strapping around the boxes of vac packed meat .
Anyway when we had repaired it ,it needed testing before going back in the factory .
apprentice was fed thru the machine and strapped pretty much head to toe with about 50 bands , then carried outside and left in the middle of the yard

Mother in laws next door neightbour worked in a forge, it was only about 8 inchs round but it weighed a bloody ton

We used to get a string of graduates through. Cocky ones got sent to the wax room, where the wax ladies used to sort them out.

Worst one for the apprentices at Longbridge was the sewing room, they'd get sent under the tables to sort out footswitch faults, one of the girls would grab his head (next bit not for family friendly forum) and he'd come out red faced
