Dual Inductance?

Hi all,
I have recently bought a unimig procraft 240 as seen at http://www.unimig.com.au/index03.html.

Now this machine has the ability for changing the inductance This is accomplished by changing the earth electrode to one of two positions. Now I am new at Mig welding and still finding my way but it would seem that it does not matter what inductance I use it does not appear to change my welds. Not that they look that good any way yet

I have the manual but the machine is made in Italy I think and the translation to english leaves a lot to be desired. The bit about inductance is totally incoherent.

Could any one tell me what the inductance setting does?
And how it is used?

Hi,
You have the tourch pluged into the + & the clamps into the - for gas mig / mag welding & the other vway round for gasless flux wired welding.

PS I have just bought the 210 amp one & it kicks ass on thick stuff (2 x 5-6mm). Not tried it yet on thin stuff

The inductance has nothing to do with polarity, +/-

The two or three inductance settings, you will only notice a difference with dip transfer. THe lower inductance will cause the arc spray metal for a slightly shorter time from it, and at a slightly faster rate. The higher setting will give slightly more heat but less metal at the highest point of the cycle.

Hitatchimad is right, the Inductance setting adjusts the arc from Dip Transfer (standard mild steel/s.steel welding) to Spray Transfer for better results on Aluminium.

Ah just spoted that the 210 dont have dual inductance.

Thanks all for your great responses. Only found this site yesterday and there is some great stuff here. All are to be congratulated.

Weldequip, have always been confused about dip and spray transfer and this inductance thing is probably why. Just to clarify which inductance setting should I use for best results with Dip transfer?

Dip transfer 'dips' the molten wire into the weldpool & Spray transfer 'sprays' it onto it, as the names suggest. On the Inductance tappings the more "squiggles" = spray transfer.
