Drum sanders. Anyone got one?

I'm looking at getting a drum sander for cleaning up things off the plasma table. Does anyone know if they are good for this? I don't want to spend a lot if I don't have to but don't want to buy a piece of junk and regret it. I've seen the silverline one for about £60. (Yes I know it'ssilverline ). Anyone got any better suggestions?

I tried and failed to find something ages ago. The only thing that seems to do it is those massive ones with a conveyor that you see on YouTube from the states.

The bits off the plasma table at CLH get chucked in a cement mixer and tumbled about to knock all the dross off - if that's what you mean about cleaning them up.

That does work. If you can get punchings from an ironworker and throw a bucket of them in there as well it’s more effective

The parallel motion looks like a beefed-up tapping arm that could be clamped to a standard welding table. Or make your own with two bits of box section and a gas strut from the back door of a Maxi.

We'd have to think about the spinny bit on the end but the commercial one looks like a standard motor with a rotary brush glued onto the shaft.

I do batches of small components sometimes and clean them up by putting them on an old magnetic chuck and hitting them with a flap disc. I thought the drum sander might work better. I'm aware of the cement mixer trick but don't have the space and in my small workshop the noise would drive me nuts anyway!

Electric cement mixer, baby bell, old duvet round the outside of the drum, job done.

Useless for cleaning dross, you'll just end up knocking the corners/edges right down and nothing will be flat.

If you're plasma cutting loads of stuff, look for a cheap time saver machine. More common in the states than here but leaves a lovely finish.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I was told by someone that burnishers worked really well! The time saver looks brilliant but well outside my budget and available space. I'll have a think. It's not a huge problem as I don't do thousands of parts but it would be nice to speed things up a bit.

The drums on that silverline look small,?standard size is 100mm and they don't look big enough.
It also looks underpowered although it might be fine if the wheels are smaller than the normal ones.

I've got a proper one, mostly use it for refinishing brushed stainless after welding but it will take plasma dross off fine.
Direct it from the center of the workpiece outwards and run along the edges at 45deg and it flicks the dross off quickly.
Move a bit slower at less angle and it cleans a nice area up ready for welding as well.

If it is a burnishing machine you are after I've got a Fein one that I would sell, nice machine but it's 110v though.

I think @doubleboost got a freebie from BangGood. He seemed quite pleased with it for his plasma cuttings, but don't ask me which videos it was in

Katsu do one. 1250W. About £60 from Aim. I got a used one with loads of brushes from Ebay. Seems OK, but I haven't used it in anger. I haven't got a plasma cutter. The seller said she'd only used it to strip a wooden beam. and it had done a good job.
