Drum motor reversing switches

Discovered that the switch installed in my Elliott Progress 2G isn't of the reversing type....and now find a need to do quite a bit of power tapping.

Did you get to try this switch? Is it indexed at 90° (as per the Progress switch plate)?

A tapping head doesn’t need a reversing drill, of you’ve a need for lots of tapped holes.

I can't remember if the switch is indexed at 90 degrees.

I am sure I still have it in my electrical spares drawer. Unfortunately, I away with work for a few weeks.

There are modern reversing switches on eBay cheap enough, but not sure what they are like. Anyone used one? Do they feel nice and solid? Will they cope with the same extended handle set up?

I had one of these cheap chinese switches on a boxford lathe with a 2hp, 240 v motor. It worked fine but I always made sure the lathe was completely stopped before switching direction. It was probably on the lathe 3 - 4 years and I sold the lathe with it still working ok..........

people make the big mistake using the dewhurst drum switch to turn the motor on and off with. you should use the contact starter 1st then alter the drum to either off forward and reverse otherwise the contacts burn out a lot quicker due to high starting current and arking , dont bother with the cheap chineese ones there krap

I got one where the contact bars that touch against the sprung faces are arc-ed to *ook from controlling the motor directly - still need to wire it up to the VFD to do forward reverse control / start stop after about 6 months of cleaning it up Unfortunately not got a pic of the bars themselves to show, however they are fiddly little buggers to get back together.

Decided on this one


£15 from Amazon (needed it urgently), £5 from Aliexpress. Looks chunky, indexed at 90° and ON-OFF-ON (but only 3 positions) so will hopefully replace what's fitted...



Which although it looks like the correct Crater switch, does not have the 3rd set of contacts - might also do something about the nyloc.

It came as a surprise to me that they used both reversing and non-reversing switches on the Progress. I bought a new one from Gate which turned out to be just on-off.
When I queried it they said that both types were fitted. It's a pity that they never stated that in the eBay sale Eventually they supplied the correct item with me covering the cosy of the return postage.

I wonder if they're actually Progress 1 switches which don't seem to have reverse (probably little use without the back gear)...

I don't think @Tinbasherdan will mind me saying, he also had one of these switches on his Kerry lathe, I don't know what hp his motor was.

Can anyone help me to wire a 60a chinese drum reversing switch please?

The drum switch arrived - not bad quality but only silver plated brass contacts. The detent system is quite nice with a very positive 90° action which by default is ON-OFF-ON so only 180° rotation although it looks as though this could be converted to full 360° by removing the end stops to give FORWARD-OFF-REVERSE-OFF... as per original.




The slight problem is that it's designed for surface mounting using two lugs on the back plate. I need it to panel mount to the original cast aluminium switch plate. Easiest way to do this was to 3D print a custom front cover integrating the Progress mounting holes...

To expand a little on this.
A tapping head has a clutch to prevent you smashing the tap + it instantly reverses when you let pressure off the drill lever arm.

With respect those long screws with the awesome thread cutting should tell you how good that switch is, though perhaps by now they have a new dog in the machine chewing the threads out.
