I’ve got a heidenhain dro, would I be able to use a different make of scale as I need one for my cross slide?

Machine dro do patch cables you can normally connect most scales to a head unit using those.
While your here what went on with the motor ?

Oh excellent thanks, I bought a new motor in the end, got a larger frame size because it worked out a bit cheaper, just waiting on a pulley now

The brake 'lever' does not have much clearance (2-3mm at most) , my pulley came loose recently and started rubbing.
With mine back against a wall its pain in the arris to get too and sort, I have used a new key and double grub screwed with the hope it wont move again.
Those sockets on the back is nice addition, easy connection for the head unit

That does sound a ball ache! I’ve got a pulley with taper lock bush coming, il make sure it’s clamped up tight!

Heidenhain scales/DROs are usually proprietary, often 1vpp rather than square wave.
