Drinking water barrel problems.

Howdo chaps.

After fruitless hours wandering around the webnet, I once again defer to your collective wisdom.

My latest project for the lorry is an externally mounted water tank, for washing (me, not the lorry ) and filling the flask, after boiling. I've fabricated an angle-iron platform, about 500 mm square, with a slatted pine top that will bolt to the top of the chemical recycling plant that masquerades as my exhaust. On top of this I want to clamp a suitable "tank" of 4 or 5-ish gallon capacity. That will see me okay for a week as I can top-up when I fill up with diesel, anything bigger will be awkward to fit due to the Hiab folding up just above the exhaust. Weight is no problem, I stand on the exhaust when I'm greasing the crane.

Problem is, I can't find a suitable container. A highly polished custom-made s/s tank would be great, but would no doubt invoke the Yorkshire Warcry . I briefly thought about a caravan-style "aqua roll", but I'm all for something different. An aluminium beer barrel of the right size, if they exist, would do a treat, but I'll be hanged if I can find one. Maybe even one fabbed up from high pressure waster pipe?

Cider barrels are stainless steel as the cider reacts with aluminium ones.

Get one from a motorhome (black plastic, I am not sure were and how your mounting it from the description but be aware potable water and warm places don't mix Ref; Legionnaires etc. Boats use stainless but its expensive perhaps more than buying bottled water and leaving it in the cab etc.

Look at the Caktanks catalogue, caktanks co uk cak products, they supply the tanks for motorhome builders, might have something that fits the bill.

As a motorhomer, I had thought about a motor home-style tank. CAK of Kenilworth do a goodly range. Regards Legionnaires, any water for drinking will be boiled first, and the supply will be refreshed quite often. The reason for the outside mounting is quite simply my cab is fairly small, so space is at a premium. I haven't the room to store bottled water. I've just recently had the ok from the boss to remove the passenger seat and fit a wooden platform in its' place to bolt my fridge and portabog to. In an ideal world, I'd drive a huge megatoplinespacetrotter cab, but life being what it is, I make due with what I'm given and adapt it to suit my needs.

The joy of a smaller cab is that I get to places that our Scania boys can't! My wagon is 11' 9" high to the top of the Hiab, the Scanias are over 13' tall, and I get sent to a lot of places where the bigger cabs cannot physically fit. My regular "nightmare" is rail to York. The rail depot is on Leeman Road and the only way in is under a 12' 3" tunnel and no matter how often I go through it, it still worries me.

Hi, the only way you will get Stainless or Aluminium beer kegs is by nefarious means and if you're caught with one the penalties can be severe. The only thing I can see with the plastic ones is what is their temperature range? You don't want it going soft and droopy

Summertime may be an issue......if it ever comes/gets warm enough for long enough.
