drilling through hacksaws

hi,

i've got a little secret project which involves hacksaw blades, i have successfully drilled through two blade so far but got a lot more, it took me about 10 minutes to drill through each one, but now i got no such luck whenever i try to drill through another one the drill just slides of it, so i tried marking it with a centre punch but it dulled the end of the punch.

so is there any way of drilling through them in a decent amount of time.

i am using makita HSS metal drills, i think with a titanium coating on them.

are there any special drills needed for these type of metal (hacksaw blade)

Hacksaw blades are very hard - you probably need a stellite drill or similar. May be a bit OTT, but I have drilled through a file with one of these, just to see if it could

What I used to do was to take a masonary drill (which is quite cheap) of the right diameter and grind its edge to a shape close to regular metall drill ( you need a special grinding wheel for this material (its green) and then you can drill it.

A DECENT cobalt drill should do it too, they make a decent job of inconel anyway and i`m sure thats harder.

Depends on what type of hacksaw blade you are drilling + how many holes.

If they are carbon use a Stub Length Carbide or cobalt drill,

If they are HSS (high speed steel) use Stellite. If you've only got few to do a Stub Length Carbide Drill might just do it.

With both options you need a rigid setup with everything bolted down cos you need high speed + high HP. DONT use coolant on Stellite.

Use stub drills as they are much more rigid than std length drills.

I've managed to get through case hardened gear wheels with decent carbide drills. Swine of a job, though!

Could you not make a shear punch and close fitting die (block with hole drilled in it) and shear the holes into a hacksaw blade as their fairly thin?
worth a try because itll be a damn sight quicker if it doesnt shatter the blade...

Possibly, but as MrFluffy mentioned, it may shatter the blade.

DONT buy cheap, its more expensive in time & cash. (eg: cheap drill machines from Screwfix )

Why not drill bandsaw blade instead, cut to suitable length, the teeth are hard but the rest of the blade is soft and drillling is easy.

Well done Andy for thinking out of the box (now why did'nt I think of that) the rest of us have been to blinkered.

Tin coated cobolt would probably do BUT ask them anway Jimmy.
