Have found an old commercial drill supplied by Manning,Maxwell & Moore,Inc.Railway,machinists,tools & supplies of New York, it flat belt drive built like a brick privvy ! about 7.5 ft high all there & working will try & get photos but a bit berried at present a real steel for a vintage machine collector.
They appear to have been mainly a supply house rather than manufacturer, but in earlier days also made equipment

A camelback drill press? I never saw one in real life, nor even heard of one in this country though I guess there must be a good few kicking around. Does it have powered downfeed too?

There's a photo of one in the projects forum. We made plenty of them in this country. Why did someone come up with that term for them btw? I've never been able to figure the resemblance to a camels back.

I like the way you attached the base to the wall.

I would guess you could change the belt onto other pulleys, if you can't it's a bit limited on what you can do.

The base looks to be 1/4 1/2 tone had a job finding the drill let alone the wall tis a thing that requires a good table vice don't think it takes prisoners

what you think is fixing is motor tray there is belt change & head gearing, have not looked to see what it is all for they just said they wanted shot of it to big require room

You're joking with 2 belt reductions and a back-gear that thing could out-perform just about all modern drill presses. It'd take your arm off and not drop a single RPM I think.

Not a joke at all if you couldn't change gear/speed of the drill it would leave a limited window of reasonable speeds vs diameter of drill.

As fair as equipment goes there are new machines suitable for every job just as there was many years ago.

That looks like it has a wide range of speeds. Four speeds on the primary belt drive then it looks like a four speed motor judging by the star lever and possibly some gear changes too. Most modern drills advertise massive high speeds, but don't have the low speed gears which are far more useful if you want to drill big holes, which is kind of the point for a BIG drill!

With brobdingnagian drills like this, is it possible/acceptable to put a boring bar in it? - Obviously with everything securely held down.

I have used a drill like that a few years ago ...it worked fine. I used it for drilling out the centres of cambridge rolls taking them out to around 3" for a new shaft.

To me a big radial drill would be more useful, fact is then as soon as you inherit the fact it's more useful the price goes up second hand. Also fact is put a long drill in a radial or large press like this and regardless of how strong/powerful the machine is you still get drill wonder. If you want to reduce that to a minimum to need to go to a gun drill.
