Considering the trailer will weigh unladen about 800kg I dont think it is excessive for something that will weigh 3500kg laden.
Ok maybe I am losing maybe 100kg capacity but the knowledge that it will take whatever I throw at it - espeically when being used offroad - is more than enough for me,
And seriously - I get 28mpg out of my Discovery 1 normally - towing I can get 30!
Aerodynamics and mechanical drag are 2 big limiting factors.

Aerodynamics and Discovery 1 are words not normally used in the same sentence , unless bad is mixed in there somewhere!!.
I do travel steadier in mine whilst towing only the other day a nice police man mentioned I was doing a steady 78 mph with my car trailer on and thought it was a bit quick.

I used to work for British Steel & we used to produce castellated beams to reduce weight but retain strength, basically the beam web was cut down the middle, triangular shapes were then cut out of both sides of web & then the two sides were welded.back together to form a beam with 4 sided lozenge shapes cut.out of it.

My Ifor Williams weighs almost exactly a ton and is rated for 3500 kgs so you are in the right zone, however mine is a 17'6" tipper that you can drive a vehicle onto when tipped, so has a sort of double chassis arrangement that pivots at the front with a hydraulic cylinder.

I still think its over done, our cattle trailer is 1100kg but that's got 500+ of stainless and alloy on top of the bed.

Our ten ton tipping trailer for behind the tractor isn't made from Rsj's it's just 180x60x8 channel and it takes a lot of abuse..!
