drilling and tapping

a nice little job drilling and tapping a 4.0mm hole in some rod . pity i snapped the tap in the hole only the second time ive snapped one in 45 years the good news was i got it out easy and started re tapping it with a spare , bad news is it wernt lined up right and parallell to start of with. just laziness realy as i had the rod in the lathe and could have started the thread off in the tailstock chuck anyone one else don something they wished they hadnt

Same as me when I made die holder for the tailstock,needed to tap a small hole for a grub screw to secure the die in the holder,thing snapped and I had to drill it out and make the hole bigger and tapped.

Tried to do it by hand instead of putting it in the bench vice and put the tap in the drill chuck and lower the chuck by hand and twist the chuck as it was threading....think they call it ambidextrous innit?

whevever something like this happens I put it down to a learning curve and a challenge( under the cursing) Kinda sorts the men out from the boys!!!! I end up as annoyed at loosing a a piece of my tool history as cocking the project up.Like you taps and dies will be all Good quality branded HSS stuff you dont want to brake or loose.
Seems indexable TCT lathe tooling tips have a habbit of braking.
However just a few days ago I was having a go at cutting a male 16 X 4 L/H acme thread thing on a bar, I need a female doing at some time. Tool all ground up nice brazed TCT tipped job, few passes and reversed back to start position, wound the tool in re started the lathe-- oops who left it in reverse and took the brazed tip off the tool. ****-- just one of many over an old codger or should that be bodgers life.

Every so often you do something and it goes wrong... you step back, and think to yourself "Why the hell did I just do that!?"

Did a couple of folds in some thin steel chequer plate ages ago.... used 30degree top tooling.... mullered the lot of it.
Not quite sure why I did that!

Snapped an m6 roll forming tap a few weeks ago, drilled a 5mm hole which would've been great if i intended to cut the thread
Stubbornly insisting on folding something out of one piece even when i know it'll be a ball ache and probably faster in two pieces. Then having to take the folder apart to get the workpiece out

These are two I`m watching, probably to cut just one thread in either a bock of Delrin or possibly Brass/Phoshpher. Thats why I fancy atry at cutting one on the lathe, but at 16mm od male there is little room to cut the female on the lathe

Hold back a minute,Stan might have the solution to cutting one in delrin providing I can find the link? this is unbelievable way providing you have the trapizoidal leadscrew?

This one or maybe a similar one-- its on the to do list as I have a piece of Delrin, just need to get the cross slide shaft out to try.

what it is, I bought a Milling table to fit the Harrison 140 or so I thought when it came the phospher bronze nut is damned imperial and maybe off the L5 or an L5a if they made an imperial one, it was cheap and I thought i`ll make a metric one to replace it. There are several companies doing ready cut nuts I could adapt as well.
G&M tools also have an L16 listed. it looks exactly the same but despite my best efforts they will not answer E mails asking them to double check sizes, also asked on the Harrison lathe forum for any L16 owners to measure theirs.

I've made a couple of heat-formed acetal nuts now and they both worked extremely well. Just make sure you form them near the end of th escrew if it's a used one of they will be very tight for a while.
