Dont bother sourcing collets, I had one of those with a embossed Martek logo, and they are terrible even with the right parts.
We were going to have a joke giveaway on a site I was involved with, but the level of excitement for a "free martek compettition" got a bit unruly and some people were put out when I pointed out it was a nasty cheap drill sharpener and not a special handmade martek frame equiped motorcycle

A bit to rich for me, sounds a lot of money just for resharpening the occasional drill. I was think more along the lines of a grinder which you didn’t have to use the side of the stone e.g cup shaped abrasive.

I'd definitely urge making the effort to learn to hand sharpen, it's quicker and can be used on site.
I've met blokes who didn't even know a drill could be resharpened.
I was taught in secondary school, admittedly way back when Britain still had manufacturing industries and there was a possibility us guys in my class might just end up in one.
Filing, hand sawing, turning, screw cutting, rudimentary forging, brazing, silver soldering, raising, shrinking and planishing etc, etc.
All gone, to be replaced by ? "Regular Fries and a Coke with that?"

Same here minus the screw cutting but there was no way they were letting us loose on the bench grinder.

This was back in the late 70's, the other thing we were not allowed to play with was the shaper but oxy acetylene was fine

One would need to sharpen a fair few bits to recoup that cost.

its the age old argument don't grind on the side of a wheel . the reliance and all there copies use the side of the wheel to sharpen drills . your only touching them up . if the drills that bad u get them the best u can then finish off on the jig . ive sharpened a fair few drills on the side and I cant say it has worn as lot off it

Might be luck but had some success with the jig on a 5.5 this morning. Only let it touch the wheel in one direction (jig a bit worn) so the cutting edge is the last part to touch the wheel...if that makes sense. Nice big spirals coming off the metal now

Matt remember that is the jig price the machine it's self is around £250 they appear on the bay sometimes

Good morning gents. My two cents. I do site work as well as in the workshop, I got a Darex drill doctor many years ago (the first model) with the two holders, which could do up to 19mm with split point. As do much s/s there was a need to have the bits sharp and the geometry right. There was a getting used to it time and it could produce a good result but it was fiddly. You had to understand the operation to get the best out of it. I wore out two diamond wheels in the process and still have it today, however it doesn't get the use it had prevoiusly. I have now, about for 5years a Darex XT3000 manual. Now that is a drill sharpener, even the MRS could sharpen drills on it, it is much less fiddly and results are better, not to mention much faster. Yes it comes with a price tag, with attachments it will sharpen to (32mm I think) does countersinks and other stuff, which I don't use or remember. When out on site at other workshops I offer to sharpen the workshops drill bits, some accept, others don't, but it is a way of justifying it and it is paying for itself. I primarily got it for myself, as there is no sharpening shop around when you are 250km from the nearest town or it's the weekend. When you snap or damage a drill at 10.00pm and it is the last hole, after that you can go home. All tooling must be justified and you get what works for you. Again my two cents worth

I have looked at the 750X many times but the plastic chuck and cams put me off for price tag on the UK 240v version. I was tempted by the Proxxon BSG220 unit as you can see the grinding process but that’s not exactly a high quality bit of kit for the price and seems to be aimed more at the woodwork market.

Drill Doctor sitting in my living room just now....will test it today

You can take the cover off the side to see the grinding but not completely open view like the Proxxon...there’s certainly a lot more adjustments/fiddling on the Proxxon...maybe im hoping for too much 'plug n play' with the drill doctor...willsee!

The results will be interesting to see, I would like to try one before splashing out. I can hand grind well enough but the smaller bits are never that good done by hand.
