Drill press chuck

Are the cheap £30ish eBay/Amazon MT2 toolless chucks any good? Just got a new pillar drill and can't be arsed with a chuck key.
Also need recommendations for a budget friendly set of bits up to about 16mm, maybe 20mm, for steel.

I’ve got one and it’s crap. The run out is huge. Well in engineering terms it’s huge anyway. I think they’re luck of the draw.

I wonder if it is possible to improve the cheapie ones to reduce the runout? I've always fancied a keyless. Even the Jacobs ones we have here aren't that sparkling compared to a keyed one.

Nice and sharp - shank a bit soft so will gouge when used in a cordless drill and it slips. Brilliant in a lathe or decent drill chuck.

Talking of chucks some of the keyless B16 imports can be pretty good. I have one and it is brilliant. You can often find new/old stock Jacobs keyed chucks.
My favourite - and it grieves me to say it - is an Albrecht keyless. Not at all cheap but I was lucky and found a bargain mint condition one.
TBH a new Chinese chuck will usually be better than a worn out quality one.
Buy from RDG or APT and they are good for swapping out if there is too much runout etc.

Ah ok, I usually get these for work, mainly because the box it nice and stays closed in my tool bag. I'll try the ones you mentiond for my pillar drill as they'll be on the shelf.

Yes that is the same as mine. Very accurate - mine is on an R8.
However it is not truly keyless - you have to use the spanner supplied sometimes.
But very much a good buy.

I've had quite a few bits and bobs from RDG (a Pratt 3 jaw for my harrison, a couple of new keyed 16mm chucks and a vice for my drill press), can't really fault them.

For what it’s worth I’ve the Jacob’s one like that and 9/10 I have to put a bit of bar in the hole to hole it to release the bit.

For drill bits up to 13mm I can really recommend the sets of drillpro cobalt ones from banggood as reviewed by board member @doubleboost on his youtube channel.
You will not go back to hss bits after using these!

For sizes larger than 13mm I would suggest some blacksmiths drills from UK Drills. You'll just have to watch your speed as the max speed for larger sizes gets significantly smaller.
