Drill bits

I need to get a new set of drill bits so was having a look at Dormer ones online. There are so many different types of drill bits that they make! All I need is a metric set that I will use to drill mild steel, aluminum and maybe stainless sometimes.

Recommendations?

Picked up a Hilti 1-13mm set a few months back, been quite happy with them. Even one that a mate tried to force drill a bearing race with still cuts ok.

They are made by bosch, and they look like masony drills on the tips, but are designed to go through steel, and they work well in the drill press. I have not really tried them in a hand drill as most of my steel drilling jobs are done in the garage on the press. They tend to be a bit on the short side for masony use, but just the job for steel. They can be bought singularly or in packs of about 4 or 5 (diff sized). Just buy one and see what you think. I think they start at about 3mm.

I've had a look on cromwell tools and still a bit confused.

Is it the ground flute jobbers that I need? Should the drills be black in colour or the HSS-Tin ones that are silver with a gold tip?

I get on very well with the heller cobalt ones from toolstation..cheap enough, readily available and very long lasting. I use them mainly on steel.

I can get no name jobbers for free but got so frustrated with there rubbish performance I recently bought a set of DeWalt extreme and have to say I am well impressed.

Are you in a position to resharpen them or learn how to? I just buy standard HSS and sharpen them as required. The main reason for buying drill bits now is when I need a size I don't have.

I use the powerfix drills from aldi 1-10 mm they are £7 and excellent they drill just as good as expensive ones, I have drilled stainless and spring steel with them (at the right speed). They sharpen nicely and have lasted as long than the so called hi quality ones I bought from the engineering shop.
The garage my wife works at was drilling some ht bolts out of a merc wishbone and had used every drill they had, I went drilled with one drill and got through no probs.

yea, easy on a green stone or a diamond wheel . there only carbide drills sharpened to the profile of a steel twist drill i buy the cheap impact drills for a quid and re sharpen them to cut steel wood masonary or whatever
