Draper Mig Weld 900

Ok so Im new to this welding business but am doing a wee restoration and need to get to grips with welding bodywork.

Money is tight but luckily my Dad gave me a Draper Mig Weld 900. Its gasless and I know thats not ideal and a bit more fiddly to get a decent weld but its free and will do me to start.

Hes delivering it tonight but says only problem is the wire sticks...he reckons you can still weld ok but suggests it will need sorted for long term use.

Now, Ive been googling this but it has just left me confused...I cant find any info about the welder and all I know is that it has seen very very little use.

Anybody point me towards a possible cause and solution? Ive read about liners needing replacing and maybe whole torch set up but I cant find any info at all on this particular welder, although I dont have the stock number yet which maybe doesnt help.

Hi David, the problem with wire sticking could be due to any number of things.

Best thing to do is to give the welder a test run on some 2-3 mm plate and then describe the results, preferably with a picture of the results for folks to take a look at.

Then hopefully we can try to solve the problem...

Does the welder have any information printed on it; usually there will be a diagram on the front near the controls showing specification?

Perhaps you could take a picture of the welder and post it up, so people on here can work out the model and check for replacement parts like liners etc.

I'll get on to that asap. Welder will be at my house this evening so will get some photos uploaded.

Before changing anything make sure of a few things first.

Check wire feed works correctly without wire in it.

Check the contact tip is clean and free, if not file it down gently until it is.

Make sure feed roller tension is set correctly.

When using make sure there are no excessive bends in the torch lead.

If after all this wire still sticks my first port of call would be a new liner, it may be gummed up with rust.
