draining a petrol tank

Ive done before by removing the fuel pump fuse and inserting 12v into the leg that feeds the pump.

thats waht i was going to do, easier than working out which of the 6 wires is 12V on the pump

disconnect the fuel return hose from the fuel rail and put a length of hose on to it, then put the other end straight into your new cars filler pipe. (no need for jerry cans). providing the thing actually runs. or just hot wire the pump like said above.

right, im going to try the method above of hotwiring the pump so it just pumps the fuel out, will pull the feed off the fuel rail as its easy to get to, force the hosepipe on the nd and stick it in the filler for the focus

I find with EFI its easier to run the motor and catch the tank return line into a container (with caution of course)

That's the method I've successfully used in the past.
Can be quick release/tool free connectors and it's not like you're using any significant amount of fuel with it idling as it pumps out, and no messing with wiring.

the car dont run, thought i had mentioned that but just re-read it and missed it out.

well it probably would run, but its in no fit state to try it at the moment...

That way the fuel is filtered, if you just tip it out or siphon it you could pick up crud from the bottom of the tank.

turning the ignition on and off will take ages to get a full tank out, you get about half a jam jar each time.

it will be going thru the filter when i take it off at the fuel rail input. have got the day to myself tomorrow after dropping the Mrs off at work so plenty of time to fill the fous and find some suitable containers to drain the rest into

me and one of my fathers best friends took it upon ourselves to replace the petrol tank on his z750 with a small plastic fish bowl that had a pip hotglued on...he didnt think it was as funny as we did

I would simply drill a 10mm hole in the tank and be ready to catch it. It's not like there's gonna be a demand for used plastic tanks.

read above, i might not be able to drain it all in one go and i dont want to leave petrol on the floor near other cars/where people may be smoking etc

My last transit, I removed the tank, then tipped it on end and poured the diesel out of the filler pipe.
Then I sold it on the transit forum to someone who'd had his holed by a fuel thief

Mate had a brand new Transit for private use and then got it dry lined. The installer of dry lining put a couple of self tappers through the plastic fuel tank. Of course it was done "cash in hand" so mate had to fork out something like £600 for main agent to sort out - all to save less than £50 VAT !

Tough, spray on, pick-up bed lining to protect the floor.

Here's a method I've used on a 205 GTI before.

Disconnect the feed hose to the fuel rail & place into suitable container.
Disconnect feed to starter solenoid from ecu.
Turn key to start position.

The fuel pump will operate and fill your can but the engine wont turn over coz you've disconnected the starter. If you're lucky the fuel pump will stay running when you release the switch back to run position.

Just emptied the tank on my BMW with a little jiggle syphon pump from machine mart for a fiver, saves a lungful of fumes. Got the big cap off where the pump/senders enter the tank and stuck it down there. Had to do it twice as they effectively have 2 tanks!

Well, I quickly lost interest in preserving the tank so I smashed a hole in the top and dropped a siphon in...focus is full now though
