drainage experts...?!

Bit ot for a welding site, but is anyone into large ish scale drainage works? We've about 560sq meter of yard we need to filter/seperate solids from the dirty water flowing off them, we were thinking a seperator tank like a septic tank or weeping wall, then piped to a reed bed or similar lower down the hill after we pipe some effluent from a silo pit into it.

Just not sure on what to do or what size tanks etc?!

It's a cow yard which has a little run off only really when it rains, and about 175sq m of sheep yards that only really produce dirty water when we have sheep in to sort them etc so maybe a month in a year max, other than that it's just rainwater that needs piping as atm it washes down a track making a mess as it goes!

There's too much run off for a collection tank as it'd have to be huge (250000 l +) which isn't feasible, so we're looking at a separator cleaner setup.

Will give them guys a bell mate, cheers.

A ditch on one side of the track to take the runoff and also help reduce the amount of water on the track when it rains. Or a system of ditches to spread the runoff across a large area of land, perhaps.

Hi Voipio,

not feasible with the yards as they are as the track is gravel, but its surrounded by concrete yards! the pipe I'm thinking of installing is going to have to duck and dive around these yards to get to the reed bed or whatever it is we put in, there is room for the separator to one side of the track though at the top of the hill, typical farm setup, no one ever plans for the future. Only really sorting it out as its a nuisance having muck brought down into lower yards by the run-off and with catchment sensitive farming on the up, dirty water is becoming a hot topic.

There is a gov, website that will tell you the average rain fall in your area, from that along with the covered area you'll be able to workout the amount of surface water produced.

Well that's something at least. Afraid I'm no drainage engineer but the typical farm set up seems to be settlement tanks. Had the pleasure of digging a few out!
My entire locality seems to be an NVZ. Slurry tanks going up everywhere, (well on dairy farms anyway).

there s,,it hot round our way on dairy farms and silage leakage and any surface water going in to ditches and watercourses .they come round regular and test the run off water ,a farm i was at were told to put tanks in . they were all dug out and waiting for crane to lift them in and the nazis err enviromental agency i mean came round to inspect , job would be completed and running in 2 days . they checked existing tanks and wanted them empty the same day otherwise they would prosecute if any slurry got in to the ditch

Typical situation in the countryside. lets kill a thousand badgers like yesterday because it might help slow the spread of bovine TB. No mention of double fences. Don't get me started haha.
