Well not really since it’s not what I want!

Interestingly I found a site here that sells them - $2.20 each! That’s like a pound per washer I will have to keep on hunting!

Hi, When they're in the singular they're called Thackery washers, when they're with others and have been jiggled around in the packet or box and wound themselves together and you want to separate them, they're called something else entirely.

Both are used for anti foam with O ring or plate, there are or were a lot of sub standard Thackery washers about

The last time I used or have seen those thackery washers was on a 1558 lotus twincam engine, the dcoe carbs were held on with them. The retaining nuts bottomed out on a shouldered stud leaving just the spring tension in the washer to keep the carbs against the manifold face.

Well funny enough Bob was working on one last night doing that exact thing----- sorting the carbs !! the way they work is they have an o ring as a gasket and the o ring isnt tightened solid, so it allows the carb to flex on the mounts this stops the engine vibration and heat transmitting into the carb, the vibration causes the float valve to jiggle and the carbs to flood and foam , I was changing the float valves, the heat transmission is obvious.But the one last night didnt have thackeries it had small 'o' ring washers like

It's from 1955 so 11/16 outer dia, 3/8 inner dia

the ones for webers are 5/16 or 8mm so too small.

When I worked production at Leyland Motors, some King pin dust covers on front axles were aluminium, some pressed tin, the aluminium ones were held on by double coil spring washers, tin ones by single coil. Seemed to be the thing with the designer, anything aluminium, double coil washers.

A retired draughtsman that I know always reckoned in most cases Washers = designers fad. I don't know if that's right, but I'm sure there's an element of truth.

I dont use spring washers now, I always did for years, flat washer then spring as you were taught, but stuff still came slack, I then watched a few videos on how stuff slackens off and spring washers are one of the worst ! I still use flat washers though to save the face of the item being bolted from galvanic action etc.

Although I did the same as you Norm, flat then spring washer, I could never understand it, all the spring washer would do is stop the flat washer turning in relation to the nut. Their is nothing to stop the nut, spring washer & the flat washer all turning together.

That is because you are not supposed to fit flat washers under spring ones, they are supposed to bite the metal underneath, that is why they didn't work for Norm.

That is how things USED to be designed and how you WERE taught, there were millions of cars and trucks built with flat washers then spring, then nut, that is how it was.
The same with bolts, flat, spring, bolt head.
BUT still are on many modern cars and things, in fact they even come pre loaded on a lot of jap stuff and nothing you can do with them, try and take the washers and spring off and it screws the threads because they are reduced shank for the washers .

Spring washers only help to stop a loose bolt from falling out, they don't stop it coming loose to start with (how could they, when the bolt is torque'd they're just a broken flat washer )
Or they're used with a stop on the bolt with the washer bearing against plastic fairings, etc, to limit the pressure on a soft substrate, or where the bolt isn't torqued up enough for the same reason.

thats why I posted it !! belt and braces HEHE and they even supply a torx's fastener ------just in case...

for instance fords always had flats and springs on bell housings etc
